How to enable PCI-E 3.0

Go to solution Solved by HrutkayMods,

I have a Sandy Bridge-E running 3.0 (the CPU technically supported it out of the box, but 3.0 hadn't been certified at the time Intel relaeased Sandy Bridge-E, that's why Intel's site says its certified for 2.0 not 3.0 but early X79 boards got BIOS updates to enable 3.0 and later models came with 3.0 already enabled)... But you have to force enable it with a registry hack and it WILL work (at least for most x79 boards). I used: http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3135/~/geforce-gen3-support-on-x79-platform Also make sure you're running the latest BIOS for your board

Ok, so i upgraded my  system from an i5-3470 and an Asus H61M-K to an i7-3820 with an Asus Rampage IV Formula, it's fantastic, runs awesome already, but i noticed when i first booted it up, it said that my 980ti was set to PCI-E 2.0, i know the mobo supports 3.0 so i don't know what's wrong, i looked at the CPU and it supports 2.0, but googled around and saw that you can actually make it support 3.0, but it's not guarenteed.

How can i change it to 3.0 if that's possible from the BIOS settings? Is it worth it, will i get a big difference when gaming?

Thanks in advance

Maybe you should switch the slot the graphics card is in. Generally you should put it closest to the CPU.

Edit: If you're CPU doesn't support it, there is really nothing you can do.

3820K is SandyBridge it doesn't have PCI-E 3.0

your 3470 was Ivy Bridge and it did have PCI 3.0

buy it doesn't really matter unless you go 4-Way Crossfire/SLI which with 3820K you can't really do

CPU: Intel i7 5820K @ 4.20 GHz | MotherboardMSI X99S SLI PLUS | RAM: Corsair LPX 16GB DDR4 @ 2666MHz | GPU: Sapphire R9 Fury (x2 CrossFire)
Storage: Samsung 950Pro 512GB // OCZ Vector150 240GB // Seagate 1TB | PSU: Seasonic 1050 Snow Silent | Case: NZXT H440 | Cooling: Nepton 240M
FireStrike // Extreme // Ultra // 8K // 16K

Sandybridge-E only does PCIe 2.0 looking at ARK, however Sandybridge-EP/X (Like my Xeon) does 3.0 so technically the capability should be there like you say.

I'd just poke around the advanced section of the UEFI, try northbridge controls etc.

My UEFI just has a straight up option called "PCI express revision".
