Image stabilization: Photo camera vs Video camera

The image stabilization system in a photo camera relies on having a glass element inside the lens or the sensor being able to shift movement based on camera vibration/shake.  The image stabilization inside a camcorder for example is more like a gimble system, it moves the entire container which holds the lens and sensor.

This is how IS works for a proper video camera.

 

The IS for a photo camera works for taking still images because it only captures a moment in time.  But when it comes to recording motion or moving images, it cannot compete with the type of smoothness provided by a system based on the idea of a gimble.
