I was thinking of upgrading from my current AMD setup to get a better expansion path and better gaming performance, and I discovered something interesting. It's basically the same price if I go to Skylake or Haswell, so which would have better performance? I'm not really familiar with the Skylake gaming performance, but the fact that an upgrade to a DDR4 platform is so cheap is quite intriguing.

Skylake Build

Motherboard: MSI Z170A PC MATE ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($118.75 @ OutletPC)
Total: $344.48

Haswell Build

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($174.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($122.39 @ B&H)
Total: $339.37

And yes, I know there's plenty of cheaper motherboard and RAM choices to get a better CPU, but I'm the type of loser that pays $50 more for a nice paintjob (my CSGO inventory can confirm)

I'm a fucking AMD kawaii weeaboo desu I have seen the light

I would recommend buying a new GPU first, and overclocking your CPU. Then save up and get a new CPU/mobo.

For the price of those you could get an R9 390 or a 290X.

I'll be buying a new R9 380 for Christmas and sell my current setup to get the new CPU and Motherboard. I'm well aware that my GPU is shit :P

This is the answer I was looking for. An actual reply about the CPUs and not my GPU :P

270x isn't THAT bad.

He'd still be better off buying a new GPU, since upgrading his CPU won't give him but maybe 6 FPS more.

What I said up there^, upgrading your CPU won't give you crazy benifits in gaming, getting a new GPU would.

the haswell one is sli compattible while the skylake isn't (I think)...

keep that in mind. for that reason I would say haswell

I don't plan on doing any SLI anytime soon, can't afford 2x 980ti and it's best to get the best single GPU :)

Skylake...

...but since the R9 270X isn't that bad really, you could go with an i5-6600K for now then buy an R9 380X maybe early next year.

Having the option to overclock when the CPU gets old is like a sweet bonus...Just sayin'  B)

You can bark like a dog, but that won't make you a dog.

You can act like someone you're not, but that won't change who you are.

Finished Crysis without a discrete GPU,15 FPS average, and a lot of heart

How I plan my builds -

Spoiler

For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system."

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."

I know about it, but the thing is, there is a possibility that Intel may not allow it as they'll lose the market for unlocked processors.

It's only a possibility, but the only sure thing for the meantime is the only unlocked ones are the one's with a 'k'.
