Used 970 or 780?

Go to solution Solved by Maxxtraxx,

I'm sorry Didge3... your simple questions turned into a terrible bludgeonfest. To recap, your question is:

Should I get a GTX970 or a GTX780? Right? Simple question. Harder answer.

Here at LTT Forums the answer to every graphics card question on every forum post I have read in the last month has been R9 390... and I apologize on behalf of the LTT community for that fact and the flame war that ensued in your thread since.

Between the two I have no first hand experience with the GTX780 and over a year of experience using both a single GTX970 G1 and two in SLI. I can say that the GTX970 with a good cooler will overclock extremely well, both of my cards in SLI ran at over 1,500Mhz.

It seems to me that with Maxwell(GTX970) there is a lot of free extra performance to be had via overclocking

It seems to me that with Maxwell ONLY 3.5gb(still more than the 780) of Vram is a non issue if you simply configure your game settings correctly, GeForce Experience is Exceptional at doing this free and easy.

It seems to me that with Maxwell you'll have a card that will have greater long term support from Nvidia with drivers vs the 780

It seems to me that with Maxwell you'll have a much lower power requirement and less heat generation.

I can definitely recommend the GTX970 as the preferred choice ---IMO--- but, If you're looking used(it seems you are since you're considering the 780) sometimes the best card can be determined by whatever the best deal that you can get is. (I KNOW this first hand, I just last week picked up a Titan X on craigslist for $450... and that price per fps BEATS any new R9 390)

Happy hunting and please remember, enjoy whatever you get and don't feel beat down because you don't happen to have or want for whatever reason whatever the most popular card is at the moment.

Right thanks for the info. Driver issues is something I'm going to have to look into to find more recent tests comparing these cards.... This is the offending video that started me all off though

We should all know and trust the LLT benchmarking tests right? So skip past Linus' ramblings to like 3/4 through the video and look at the benchmarks that have me confused, the 780 comes out on top (admittedly by not much of a margin) than the 970 and the 290x, so where does this leave me? If we drop the AMD possibility for a second is the 970 still better than a 780 despite this video?

Like Morgan said, old. This summer was the first major leap for the 290X - as for Asus - DO NOT BUY. Really, Asus are a nightmare with everything from GPUs to customer support

Over a year old video. That particular time is when the AMD drivers improved most. Look for benchmarks that are up to 1 month old.

Here Is the 970 keeping up and sometimes beating the 390, and the 290 Is not as strong as the 390 as previously stated.

Right, thanks everyone for telling me about the importance of looking for recent benchmarks, did a bit more googling but with a filter of up to a month old and have decided the 780 is now out. I'm between the 970 and the 290x which I'm sure I'll be able to work out as tbh they seem very similar in performance and price so I'll just go whichever I prefer when it comes to buying.

Just a heads-up - the 970 has somewhat false specs - thanks to a memory controller being disabled, it's a 224-bit 3.5GB card effectively which means.

At some point in the future, when you run out of VRAM, instead of caching in SYS RAM the 970 will start attempting to use the slow 512MB of VRAM and end up with stuttering.

I'm not going to explain to you that the 390 is faster, this has been said all over again I'm fed up with it.

@App4that confirmed that the R9 290 is just as strong as the 390. He has both cards, he tested both cards.

Excuses.... even If It's a broken port, you can still see which cards perform better, you cant really keep making excuses for the 290...

Why not test Batman then? Surely that game is also valid....said no one ever....

R9 290 is around 2-3FPS slower than the R9 390 at the same clock speeds. That is confirmed by a user of this forum, as well as by hardocp.com http://www.hardocp.com/article/2015/09/21/xfx_r9_390_double_dissipation_8gb_video_card_review/9#.Vg2-w_RHXrc

290X is 15% faster than both

R9 390 is 5% faster than both

r9 290 is the same as both but has 4GB of VRAM

Might want to be a bit more specific, at 1080p a GTX 970 stomps all over a 290X. Its a 1440p and higher resolutions that the 290X is better. And that's only because AMD targeted their high end cards for high resolutions-unlike Nvidia with the barely-enough memory bus bandwidth.

He said he doesn't want to.  That doesn't mean he wants you to try to talk him into it.

The problem with personal preference in the GPU side of things is that some people would rather pick brand over price to performance. After Nvidia abandoned Kepler and seeing AMD's 290X beating it and keeping up with the 980... who really wants to be screwed out of their money in a fairly short amount of time? Its gonna be the same story for Nvidia once Pascal comes out.

AMD VS Nvidia = A lost mail man that will do whatever it takes to give you your mail... despite being a few days late... and never realizing that the house that the mail is for was pretty much the first house he started from VS A well dressed, well groomed, well cleaned, and cologned-up donger that just wiggles itself and is the type of guy that makes after-parties a nightmare. Basically its: An idiot that tries VS a jerk that ruins every after-party. Pick your poison.

No, I never Implied that, you might have misunderstood.

Perhaps that's true, my R9 290 - R9 390 point still stands though, performance difference at the same clock speeds is negligible.

And nether card has an issue, past not liking each other

Just Cause 3 Is not as broken as that game, to even compare then Is stupid. You sound like an AMD fanboy atm.

But JC3 has no driver support from AMD yet, so you sound like a Nvidia fanboy. And we both know that's not true so lets stick to games with drivers shall we?

If anyone asks you never saw me.
