I think that this is a good move back to the Aero interface. But a cloud OS sounds really bad. I do hope that this Windows 9 will be Windows 7 but with a slightly different look but keep the same desktop design and no Metro. What do you think.

If by "Cloud OS" they mean that it will be intergraded with Skydrive and other online services and they will be implemented into the system then that's fine by me. But if they go full retard and make it that you need internet to even use your system then some people will be very, VERY unhappy :P Hopefully they will give you a choice to go for a standard Aero interface and Modern UI then that will solve many problems. Don't get me wrong if they did the Modern UI for lets say Windows 9 Touch Edition or something of that kind then it would be fine since Modern UI works quite well on tablets and touch screens but on desktops or on non touch laptops it feels too clunky.

No they mean a complete cloud OS. It says so in the article.

Lets hope someone will force them not to or we are doomed... or at least people with poor internet.

I wonder what happens to your computer if the internet goes down and the OS is actually stored on a server somewhere. Or if you are in one of the countries without fibre coverage. Presumably slower internet would result in a slower OS operation.

I think that windows 9 will still have Modern UI. I think that it might change a bit but the typical desktop is getting stale and needs some innovation. This may not be Ideal but something needs to lead to something better sitting on the same thing forever isn't a good thing. Everybody hates on Modern UI but honestly if you spend a bit of time with it you get used to it. I still use the desktop and I have installed start is back but I still use modern UI as well. Windows "10" if cloud based will probably be called Windows 365 and be subscription based and include office.

I don't want things to become cloud based but its going to happen eventually. When latency comes down enough it might even be good. I'm not scared of the future and definitely not of change. What ever the future holds it will likely be better in one way or another and I'm going to embrace it.

After reading their reasoning for the Metro screen, it's highly unlikely they will revert back, as the Metroscreen in it's 2D-Layout (X|Y) [Compared to the start screens 1D layout (Y)] makes use of human spatial memory, which once you are used to it leads to much better navigation. And the bigger and hirez the screen the better. And it's in harmony with Fitts' law so it's theoretically speaking the better UI. The disrupting factor is people's fear of change ^^

I think Windows 9 is going to just be Windows 7 with the different window themes like Windows 8 and be faster to run better on low end devices.

This, anyone regional would be getting raped. Also business security would be an issue as they like to control what is and what is not sent over the wire though i'm sure arrangements will be made for enterprise clouds, then terminals may be BYO and boot to a cloud terminal. Ugh I dont like this at all. If they do that, someone else will come in and do it better, and MS will be gone... like gone gone...

I think it's all BS, I imagine that Microsoft probably has a team scrambling around trying to figure out what they'll do for Windows 9 considering Windows 8 is so unpopular, and there may even be work going on, but it's way too soon to have the grand organizational scheme down for even Windows 9, let alone Windows 10.

Unless they're planning to release them as just "special versions". They did say that those names are not final. If this isn't just BS that somebody made up, then I predict that in the near-ish future we'll have a version of Windows 8 that keeps most of its features but uses the Windows 7 UI (Aero theme and classic start menu basically) and at some entirely unrelated time they'll put out "Windows Cloud" that is intended to be used separately from regular Windows. Maybe they'll even have Windows Cloud be accessible from ANY device, basically letting you run any Windows program on your phone or tablet (albeit with all the negatives of remote computing). Maybe internet of various types will be readily available and fast enough that by the time it's released it will actually be a reasonable choice for a lot of people. It would also be a reasonable thing for Microsoft; they've been trying to get in on the tablet and smartphone market, but so far have only managed to carve out a tiny niche. If they could make sure the people on other platforms are still using Windows in some manner, they'll be "safe" in case desktops and laptops eventually become niche products as well.

What if windows 8 is a marketing scheme ? What if they made it not "perfect" so windows 9 can be sold like hot cakes

Like what happened with windows vista and 7

I call B.S It doesn't fit Microsoft culture.

Then again.. the same crap was said on Windows 8 , during it's early development, and the only thing that was cloud was Skype integration, and sync some of your settings between devices (background, profile picture, modern UI store apps), if you choose to create a Microsoft connected account, instead of Local account.

Also, Windows 9, is Windows 8.2. If it actually ends up being Windows 9... it will still be Windows 8.2, and simply Microsoft pulling a Firefox, they want to get as far possible to "8" due to the "bad reputation", because they don't want to learn something new. Remember when Firefox had it's memory leak in version3, and it was fix in later 3.x versions, but people continued to believe it was still there, and switch to Chrome... now we have Firefox 26 in alpha which you can use. :| I mean it sure worked... no one is talking about it. And test shows that Firefox consumes less memory then Chrome.

But I like Windows 8 :( I seriously doubt they will go back to Aero. Besides being resource-hungry, it's also clunky. The transparency of W8 is better and squares look better, after all, the screen is rectangular.

it will not be gone. The only time it will be gone, is when PC desktop and laptop sales picks up like no tomorrow.

For now, the market wants tablets and convertible tablets... so this is the switch. Lean how to use the Start Screen, or get stuck in time.
