Avast Antivirus Free

Lol no, it still does, less than it used to but its still loaded with crap.... no reason to use norton when something like Avast is around.

Why pay for something when there is a free option available which is arguably better in every way?

Technically yes and its not as safe as free options (avast)

Also one thing about norton is, that the virus definitions are not updated properly, you think you are update to date but your virus definitions are like 1year+ out of date.

The only way you can get properly updated is to pay more.

 

Its not all bad though, its mainly just what they did years ago (google what they did), its left a bad taste in peoples mouths about the software.

Avast is a great AV to use. I prefer it over AVG, which i used to use then uninstalled it.

You will feel more responsiveness in certain places.

Avast, to me at least is the best FREE Antivirus, But i still stick with my Kaspersky Internet Security. :-)  It saved my PSP when it found a PSP.brick Trojan, heh

if you go back to norton, then enjoy, I've been using avast for 5 years and I'll stick to them, I'm a troubleshooter and therefor work with other peoples computers on a daily basis and from my findings Kaspersky, Norton and AVG all suck and have crappy virus definitions (at least for the free/cheap versions) you won't believe how many times I had to install avast to get rid of some trojans / backdoors on multiple computers a day. Another thing that puts avast on top is the fact that it has a built in boot sector scan in the FREE version.

 

And about that article, don't believe everything you read mate, sponsors are an evil.

once every six months

The normal active security catches most problems instantly, I just do the boot sector scan twice or MAYBE 3 times a year depending on how my pc acts to make sure I am as virus free as can be.

shouldn't make a difference unless you scheduled a boot sector scan, maybe you just have a few other apps that try loading on startup as well, good options to speed up your system: Advanced system care is an awesome piece of software and the turbo mode releases a lot of unnecessary programs. You could also use microsoft's MSconfig to configure what processes should start up automatically after boot.

Turbo boost is free, or at least it is on version 6.2 which is what I'm using on my laptop atm

I just enabled Turbo boost (work mode). I have yet to see how much of a difference it will make though. What are your experiences with it?

depends on how much operations you close and also how many operations you don't, I use ASC with MSConfig to disable as many useless processes as possible for the fastest boot I can get. (my boot is pretty fast for a mechanical drive)

Oh I thought Turbo Boost disables things so you can work more efficiently and with less lag. Why would it affect boot times?

if you choose to run it on startup, it disables the other applications as soon as it starts with windows, giving the pc less programs to have to load and that in turn increases the boot time.

not really, everything you want it to disable is in the option of a tick box, so just make sure if you use a printer or whatever that it doesn't disable printer support.
