Sorry for my bad english, I hope it will be clear enough.

 

I own the following configuration :


  • AMD FX-9590


  • Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z

 

Which I intend to change with the following :


  • Intel i7 4790K


  • Asus Maximus VII Hero

 

Is there anything to know before doing the switch ?

More precisely, will I need to setup windows 10 (retail, not oem) from scratch or will it work directly ?

yeah you should do a clean install of windows because when you change motherboards all the drivers are different

 

also you will need to call microsoft and ask them to reactivate windows because windows 10 does not support cross-hardware activation and will be invalid after you upgrade

you need a cooler - the stock cooler for the 4790K results in overheating

If I'm not mistaken, it will work just fine. It does atleast with previous versions of windows, but I am not 100% sure if windows 10 links its key to the motherboard

I've never noticed a difference but I'm sure everyone will tell me different because they spent all that money...

I honestly don't see a difference between the 4720HQ and 4590 I own even though the i7 is supposedly faster by 20%

When I switched from a FX 8350 to 4690K I was blown away on how much better Intel was for gaming!

 

All I can say is prepare for enjoyment with that 4790K!

Speaking for personal experience I owned an 8350 @ 5.0Ghz and with my 290x's in Crossfire I had a noticeable bottleneck. I moved to my I7-4790K and I was getting more fps in every situation. I dont believe that video... I also noticed less frame spiking and juddering.

The OC was rock solid and cooled under water. I dont think it had anything to do with that, I do believe it may be down to having more than one GPU.

Fair enough but in my experience thats what I observed. It may only become an issue when you have multible GPU's, but there are more than enough benchmarks in games floating around the internet that show a difference between an 8350 and an I3/I5/I7.

Going from a Athlon X2 to a i5 was noticeable

Going from a Athlon X2 to a Pentium wasn't

Neither did I, my flatmate has an i5-4690k @4,2ghz and he didn't notice a difference between real-world usage of web browsing and gaming on my 8350 @4,5 rig or his.

Waouu, so many answers. Even though it went away from the initial question, thanks guys !

 

Regarding the performance I guess it depend the use of the CPU. Yes, in my case it will be mostly for gaming (GPU : Sapphire R9 290X 8GB Vapor-X).

Most of the benchmark I've seen give the 4790k as the winner. I guess I'll see myself if there is a noticeable difference. If not, I still can return those two items.

I'm not under a "OEM" version of windows. I've read that it shouldn't de-activate while changing the hardware.

However it's still unclear if a clean setup is required or not. I guess it is "advised" anyway.

I'll prepare a bootable W10 and I'll see if I need it or not.

You don't have to reinstall windows when you switch motherboards.  In fact, it's really easy to do.  You can only have the windows key assigned to one motherboard, but it can be switched.

 

The procedure requires a telephone and an internet connection.  You call a number and you enter into the phone the code that is shown on the computer display.  After the procedure the key is transferred to your new motherboard.

 

I'm pretty sure you can do this as many times as you want too, I've done it at least twice on the same copy of windows.  I am using home professional 64 bit, system builder or student copies but just retail full versions.

Only reason to switch from AMD in my view is for 1 reason and why I went to intel and that was for M.2 support. More performance gain using M.2 then going from intel 4 Gen to current gen total. Either CPU will run every game.

There are 990FX mainboards that support M.2. I have one: ASRock 990FX Extreme6, and its cousin the Fata1ity 990FX Killer supports it as well. Plus if you really want M.2 but have a board that doesn't support it directly, there are PCI-Express card adapters for it as well.

That's not going to happen. AMD is going fucking bankrupt, they don't have the money to spend on an extremely massive improvement in such a small amount of time. Zen is very likely going to be Haswell in terms of performance, as is rumoured, which is still a massive leap for AMD, and if they can undercut Intels on prices, they can regain their foothold in the CPU market, as I've said. There's nothing more than this to the topic.

I know you love AMD, I know you don't want to face the fact that they're not doing very well right now on CPUs, but you have to face the facts, they're not going to magically come back in one swoop. Intel has had too much time to increase their performance. Zen will fight haswell, and probably win, while Intel's 14nm process fails to produce many results, giving skylake low availability, moving the focus to haswell, the next 14nm CPUs from Intel will retake the market, assuming Intel can keep supply up, and AMD will start on a new improvement to Zen that will rival that, or be better than it.

This is the future of the CPU market as can be told best by someone outside of either company.

Its simple math SMT + 14nm + 95w max then it has to be at Skylake levels or above in theory!

 

My bet so far is that AMD will make 2-core with HT, 3-core with HT & 4-core with HT. No they will not call them 4-core, 6-core and 8-core! :P
