Open back headphones <100$

N4PSTEr17

Hi everyone,

I am currently looking for a pair of headphones as a Christmas gift.

They should be:

- open backed

- under 100$

- have some base, but not beats by dre like

- don't need a microphone, so headphones only, no headsets

I am not really an audiophile, so your help is really appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I thought the 518s weren't open back. Does this mean if i bought them and played music on them then people would be able to hear the music?

yes, that is the downside to open headphones, people can hear your music. and some other noises around you might get in to your music too.

It says open on the Sennheiser website ;) Open doesn't necessarily mean that everyone can easily listen with you, but I'd find it a little rude if someone next to me on a bus would crank these up :P

Got any ideas for similar quality to the 518s but with closed back design?

I've got the sennheiser urbanite, which has decent quality. you could opt for a urbanite XL if you want closed over ear. They recently dropped in price i've seen them for under 100, if you don't care much for base get the momentum!

Could have sworn that Linus Said not to buy the Urbanites during his review!

Sennheiser HD 558. I don't know why people are recommending the 518 when the 558 is on sale for under $80.

I would have liked wireless but the wireless model is so damn expensive. If i had a windows phone ( i do) then would i pick the Android version or IOS version? And what's the difference?

I really truly appreciate the effort but sadly, all of these would be awkward to wear in public. Something I do with earphones and headphones.

You didn't specify that you needed portable aesthetics. Also, you're hijacking the thread.

Don't think you could use either the android or IOS models' enhanced functionality(volume up/down, picking up calls), I would look around on google ;)

Sorry OP. The HD 518s are on sale just a hair under $100 so  i would go grab them asap. They're also open back and appear quite nice.

So thanks everyone for your help!

I didn't expect prices to be so drastically different in Germany.

The HD518s are around 100$ here, the HD558s around 140$ and the AT 500X close to 190$.

I think I will go with the HD518 then.

Have a nice day  ;)

For future, you always post your location in a recommendation thread. People are going to assume you're buying from US Amazon otherwise.
