How to achieve 200 FPS in CS:GO? Upgrade advice required

Hello everyone.

I play CS:GO and I want to increase performance of my PC. Particularly I want to achieve stable 200 FPS. Why would I need that? Well, the answer is simple - I am going to use 144hz monitor, and I don't want my FPS drop below 150 in smoke/he etc.

My settings are all low/very low with 1600x900 resolution. With my current setup I have ~115 FPS on Dust2 and around ~60-70 FPS in smoke/he.

My current setup is:
i5-650 (3.2mhz with hyper-threading 2/4)
Acer Aspire M5811 motherboard
8gb 1333hz RAM.
MSI GTX 750Ti OC (not overclocked)

I have tested my setup with 3 different GPU's on my PC (same map and settings):
- GT320 ~80 FPS
- GT720 ~95 FPS
- R7 250x ~110 FPS
- GTX 750Ti ~115 (currently running on it)

As you can see, switching from ancient GT320 to modern GTX750ti only increased my FPS from 80 to 115.

I saw many videos on youtube where people are testing GTX 750Ti in CS:GO and they always get more than 150+ FPS on even higher settings. But they were using 4th generation i5 and i7 CPU.

The question is - what should I upgrade? Obviously I will need to upgrade my CPU and motherboard. But which one do I need? Would I need 4-core 3.2mhz 2nd generation processor, or should I look for 3rd or even 4th generation i5?

Also my GPU is using 3.0 PCI-e slot while my motherboard supports only 2.0. I heard that this might decrease my GPU performance, but not for more than 5-10 FPS.

Please help. I have some money to spend on upgrade, but I don't want to invest much money in brand new i5/i7 just for playing CS:GO, I am pretty OK with older used models. Better get new monitor and nice keyboard/mouse :)

Thank you in advance!

don't need r9 380

just upgrade the cpu. 750ti will be enough for 200 fps.

If you're planning on playing other games in the future your GTX 750ti won't handle it on 1080p.

R9 380? Can my i5-650 really handle it? Would't there be any bottlenecking?

Josephdalepi, I don't really undestand what you mean by saying that. Are you trying to tell me that my 750Ti is on its limit and I should go with 760?

I will not play other games, that's 100%. I never played actually other games, just CS.

But which CPU do I need? Can I go on with i5-2500 CPU, or should I look for 3rd/4th generation CPUs?

no. r9 380 won't help you at all. you need a new cpu. get a 4460.

Thanks everybody for advises. Now tell me please, is there any significant performance difference for CS:GO between i5-3470 and i5-4460 processors? The 4th generation seems to be more expensive, besides, I found great deal for used i5-3470 CPU.

You're not going to notice much of a difference between achieving 60 FPS in smoke vs 150 FPS in smoke.

But I really feel the drop from 115 to 60-70 FPS when HE is thrown, for example. I want always have minimum of 150 FPS with 144hz monitor.

That is interesting. Maybe it has nothing to do with the frames that you're getting but perhaps the game's mechanics?

Jedi, no, it is not game's mechanics. I played cs:go on my friends PC, he has over 200 FPS, and I was not expiriencing this kind of lags and drops when HE was thrown.

This FPS drop occures only when the HE grenade explodes or smoke is thrown. For a second or two, I expirience slight freeze or lag - that is the moment when FPS drops to 60. I want to avoid that after upgrade.

josephdalepi, I think I have explained enough? I want to avoid FPS drops to run cs:go as smooth as possible on 144hz monitor.

You may not even need to upgrade hardware if you can OC the i5-650 high enough. I have a friend who plays CSGO at that refresh on an Ivy CPU. Biggest improvement for him was OCing the piss out of his chip. Assuming you already have a decent cooler, it's a free option, just takes a bit of time to dial it in.

Thank you for the answer. I have never done OC and I don't know how it works, unfortunately. I am too afraid to burn something down, so I better change the CPU :)

Take a piece of paper, write 200fps on it, and tape it on the left or corner of your monitor. There 200 fps.

If you have plans to get rid of the CPU and board anyways, why not give it a try? There are plenty of guides out there for first gen core i's

Never mind, didn't see that you were using an OEM board. To get that kind of FPS it is almost guaranteed that you will need to OC whatever chip you go with. Skylake may have enough IPC improvement to push 150fps minimum at stock settings, but I really have no idea.

He wouldn't need nearly that much horsepower to get 144fps min. 2-3-4 gen locked i5s, and i7s should do the trick.

My CSGO buddy plays at 720p, probably why he needs the OC?

An I3 with high single core performance would massively improve your frame rate.

A 750ti is plenty sufficient to drive it as high as you want.

Thanks everybody for helping me. I decided to change my CPU for 3rd or 4th generation i5. Will give that a try :)

P.S. At least now I know that 750Ti can do the job.
