I got a hard drive that has power on time of 743 days. WD Caviar SE. From like 2007 or something I don't know!

It's working ALL FINE though, like good temps, no weird sounds, good speeds and I wonder;

How long will it hold?

I'm thinking of setting it up in my PC and saving some games to it.

Oh and while we are on it.

WD Green 2TB drive good or bad?

Thankssss! ^^

I had couple 250Gb hdd from 2007. Worked just fine, but gave them up. I wouldn't bet on them as they're over the lifespan, but normally you start noticing before it actually dies

It says it's good! That's pretty cool though... I always took care of my HDD's defrag and such.

That's cool! :) I don't really bet on it either, but it's fine for storing games on I guess! Even if it die, It won't take anything important with it.

Hey there hug0mac,

I'm happy to see that you have your old drive up and running. :)
I'd use WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic since it's the manufacturer's tool and see if the drive passes both the quick and the extended tests. Here's a link: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=xxNpfG
Getting the raw values of the S.M.A.R.T. status can also give you some insightful information regarding the drive's condition.
WD Green drives are graet for backups and secondary storage. They run cool, quiet and save energy. It would be a great choice to pair them with a SSD. Here's some more info on them: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=rqgzYR

Feel free to ask if you have any questions :)

Heeello Captain WD!

Thank you for the links! :) I always liked WD. Can't wait for the 1000 days limit to break! (I believe in it!)

Totally fine to use. I personally have had enough brand new drives fail in a matter of weeks that I don't really care what age it is... everything always gets backed up anyway.

So, as long as the old drive isn't too slow or noisy for my needs... doesn't matter if it fails.

Thank you for the kind words! I do hope that you will break the 1000 day mark and continue using the drive even further. I'd just keep an eye on the S.M.A.R.T. status every now and then to make sure the data on the drive is safe. :)

I never actually check mine.

This drive is very slow, but still works fine.

-snip-

Well, the fact that it has reallocated sectors count issues doesn't help.

This is my "oldest" drive

c7j8qlv.png

The close second has well over 1000 days of usage too, and it's WD as well.

Considering my 3 WD Black drives long outpaced their 5 year warranty, I'd say they are still good for a bit longer, eh?

@Blebekblebek The drive is rather good with the exception of the 05 attribute that indicates problems with unreadable sectors. This may be an indication of the drive starting to fail so I'd back everything up just in case. 11 is a low number but you never know if this is an actual physical damage and if it will cause more problems. 3.33 seconds is also a bit long time for spinning up. :) I would consider replacing the drive if it's still under warranty.

@TetraSky the drive is in a better than amazing condition given it's usage time. :) Great job maintaining it!
