GTX 980TI or R9 390X?

Cookiemonstahr

I'm low on budget, my salary is bad but if I wait patiently I'll be able to eventually buy a 980 ti. But I'm not patient at all, in fact, I hate patience. My question is, is 980ti worth the wait? Or should I go for the 390x which is much cheaper? Is 980TI significantly better than the 980ti or just small difference?

What resolution will you be gaming at? to answer your question about 980 vs 980 Ti I assume its a pretty big jump to be honest.

If your budget isn't as flexible, don't go for enthusiast-class GPU. Find the best bang for your buck in the mid-tier GPUs.

I recommend the 390/x then for you. it'll tear through games at 60 FPS +.

Battlefield 4 runs at almost 60 fps on ultra x4 MSAA with my awful video card.

> in my country a 390X costs a month of salary for me and 980TI costs like 3 months of salary xD

The difference between 390x and 980ti is big yes, and even at 1080p 980ti won't be overkill, as some games really are demanding, especially if you have a high refresh rate monitor and want to play at over 100fps. If you don't though, and want to stay at 60, then the 390X will do. Although personally i'd rather a 980 but that's because i am bias to nvidia.

Get the 390X if you are at 1080p60hz. The 980Ti is overkill for 1080p unless you are using a 120/144hz monitor.

Save some money and go with the R9 390 non-X. The 390X is like 5-10% faster than the 390. For 1080P an R9 390 or a GTX 970 is loads.

@Cookiemonstahr

Just to add - although if you absolutely want to max EVERYTHING out for years to come, then I guess 390X is the way to go and any improvement you can get is worth it... I don't think the 390X has great value but if spending a couple more dollars per FPS means the card lasts a bit longer, then maybe that's the way to go.

To give you an idea I have a GTX 980 Ti and I play at 1080P... the 980 Ti is about 1/3 faster than the 390X if memory serves. Here's the performance I get on my more demanding games:

GTA V - Max settings, advanced settings disabled, anti-aliasing disabled - 80-120 FPS

Battlefield 4 - Full ultra, anti-aliasing disabled, 150% resolution scale (basically 1440P) - 80-140 FPS

Dying Light - Highest settings except view distance at about 70%, anti-aliasing disabled, - 70-110 FPS

If you plan to upgrade to 1440p, which is without a doubt, a superior expirience, you should get the GTX980Ti.

The Referenze Design is already much faster than the 980 and the custom Cards destroy it completly.

But again, its kind of waste Performance if you just game on a 1080p Display.

For 1440p the 980Ti is really the only choice for ultra 60FPS.

For 1080p on the other hand, a 390x or even a 390 which is about 100-125USD cheaper and performs 10-15% worse is a very good choice. I don't know anything about your money situation, but if every dollar is hard earned i would go for the 390.

As for the difference between the 390x and the 980Ti, it's huge to say the least. the stock 980Ti beats the 390x by more or less 30%, but a decently overclocked can beat it by up to 60%.

Also keep in mind that if you pair a 390 or 390x with a Freesync monitor it will be butter smooth down to 35ish Fps. Which means you don't need to maintain 60Fps. You wont notice the sub 60 Fps lag until you fall below the lower range of Freesync.

Second this. While you can achieve the same effect with G-sync, Nvidia demands a premium for the G-Sync technology. So Freesync monitors are generally cheaper.
