Is it worth to buy a GTX 970 when the monitor is 60hz?

Just questioning, it be a shame to be cap at 60 fps with such a strong graphics card.

Two things:
1. It's not that strong, it's just fine for 1080p @60FPS.
2. You're better off buying R9 390 / R9 290X

It means you'll pretty much have solid 60fps in just about every game.

 

390 is still a better card for your money, since it costs the same and performs better across the board, but that's a different topic all together.

New games would mean harder to drive engines, which means it won't stay at 60fps for long in the future.  Also depending on price, the 390 may be better.  Performance difference is minimal at best, 1-4fps or so.

390 is still a better card for your money, since it costs the same and performs better across the board, but that's a different topic all together.

 

*performs better in average frame rates, but worse in timings and minimum frame rates.  ;)

It's still worth it, just means you'll get a seamless experience on any game. Whereas on 120hz or whatever, often you'll be up and down in terms of fps. But a good upgrade path would be to get one of those cheap AOC 144hz gsync monitors in the future.

Guys I know the R9 390 is a better graphics card but GTX 970 is on sale for 250$ right now and it comes with assassin's creed syndicate/rainbow six siege. I'm a student so I need to get the best for my money.

what 970 is it? There are some out there that have crappy coolers and throttle like hell.

I know it's a bit odd of me to reply with my admittedly not-that-fast 7970, but for the games I play, how powerful this card is simply means that I don't ever drop frames. Which is handy.

60Hz is totally fine for most people.
