What is a good use for an old laptop?

Ghostay
Go to solution Solved by QueenDemetria,

So, when I build a PC I am not going to have a use for this laptop, it won't be worth much and I don't intend to sell it, what can I do with it?

use it to test sketchy things online

General consensus is that you don't test sketchy things online.

How does In Home Streaming work, is that streaming the game over the network, will I get PC performance on a laptop?

And anyway, if the VM breaks I can always take it back to the store I bought it from!

Run a linux distro on it. Use it to program Arduinos or drive a 3D printer or something like that.

Use it as a media center or home theater.

It take the screen on your main PC and mirrors it to your laptop.

I'd probably try this, main concern would be latency, but it's worth a try.

Il trade you two laptops for it

each is not as powerful, one I use as a linux box for random stuff (and I used to use it for vintage games) and one I use as a backup PC.

reason: I need something with even a poo discrete card in it so I can play source  games and the likes at lan parties. i3 intel HD barely pushes 30fps. Believe me, that thing you could probably use as a portable gaming machine.

You can keep it at your front door of the house and use it to deter any thieves as they will take that and run.

BTW you can sell that Hard Drive if you're bothered to as well.

That laptop is certainly worth a whole heck of a lot more than a couple of the other laptops I use. I use my Toshiba Satellite P30 as an upstairs computer, because I'm too lazy to bring my main machine (also a laptop) upstairs because I keep it hooked up like a desktop. That Toshiba Satellite has a Pentium 4 running at 3.4GHz, 1GB of RAM and an ATi Mobility Radeon GPU with only 128MB of video memory, and I use it to watch YouTube videos (which it actually does decently), listen to music (because it has wicked speakers) and to browse the Internet. I previously used an Apple PowerBook G4 to go on trips because it's cheap and it's expendable, and it was small (a 12" model), but I stopped using it when YouTube broke the functionality of YouTube desktop clients. This PowerBook is even weaker; it has an 867MHz PowerPC 7455 processor, 1.12GB of RAM and NVIDIA GeForce4 420 (yay) Go with 32MB of video memory. The reason I don't bring that Toshiba Satellite anywhere is because it's huge. It's thick, heavy and big (that's totally what she said) and as a result it doesn't fit in any of my laptop bags.

That laptop of yours has plenty of life in it. You can use it for practically anything your desktop can do, except for playing a lot of the modern, heavy titles that are coming out. It probably also won't render video as well. It's also still decently valuable. I'd say you could get at least $400 out of it if you were to sell it. If I wanted to sell my Toshiba Satellite, I wouldn't expect more than $50 out of it.

I have no signature. There is nothing to see here. Move along.

Problem is it's keyboard is very damaged, and that detracts from it's value, Nice to hear that it's quite powerful compared to others. :P

Laptop keyboards are usually easy to replace. I can get at them usually pretty easily, but newer laptops are harder than older ones. But most laptops now require a fair amount of disassembly to get at the keyboard.

Might I suggest a correction? When you said "It's keyboard" and "It's value", you should have said "Its" instead because "It's" is a contraction of "It is", whereas "Its" is possessive. I don't mean to be rude, but I just thought I'd point it out.
