Advantages: It's a lot smoother in games like Grand Theft Auto, Civ 5, not so much first person games, I've found

Cons: It takes a lot more power to upkeep a constant 144 frames per second

Desktop use smoother mouse movement. Gaming with the faster refresh rate smoother perceived gaming experience less time screen tearing on screen.

dude wat

In games like CS, dishonored, first person in GTA, battlefield, I haven't seen a visible improvement with increased frames.

OP, don't believe these guys trolling you. Human sight is not capped to 24 FPS (frames per second). And where ever it is 'capped' there are individual variances. When talkign computer gaming FPS more is always better.

Those numbers, 60Hz and 144Hz are the refresh rates of the displays. The actual FPS in games varies according to how much load the graphics card is under. Higher refresh rate look smoother. It's that simple; bigger is better. Also the minimum refresh rate for nVidia 3DVision to work is 120Hz. So the 60Hz monitors don't support the 3D-glasses.

But you really should see the difference yourself. It might very well be that for you personally, 60Hz is enough. No-one other that you can tell that to you. So if any of your friends or some brick-and-mortar store can demo it for you, do check it out.

I already so the difference at 65hz (yes, with an extra 5hz) just by moving my cursor. Though I must say, like what Naeaes said:

Best to judge it yourself. I've met guys who refuse to get 144hz monitors because they say they don't see the difference compared to 60hz, even if they've demo'd it themselves. Either they're on cocaine (is a hell of a drug), or they just don't see the point of it. Either way, yeah, test it yourself. Its easier to get an explanation via you testing it yourself compared to us explaining it.

So long as there is nothing seriously wrong with your eyes the difference between 144hz and 60hz is obvious, almost everyone can determine the difference in a blind test and those with experience can tell within a moment just moving the mouse pointer. Its obviously better from the first moment you use it, so much so infact you will find very few people who are willing to give it up once they have tried it, its the most important feature of a new monitor for them. For gaming when the fps is also high its very smooth and for competitive games its definitely an advantage.
