They can encrypt your drives and/or send massive voltage to the cpu

I don't know about that, unless it somehow has really deep control.

 

 

Like mentioned above they can encrypt data which makes hard drives useless. They could also make your system run at 100% load which slows it downs and introduces heat and wear.

just do the same thing software like easytune and xtu does. Except without your control.

The only thing I can really think of is damaging your hardware with legitimate software like AMD Overdrive, due to user error. But I'm not sure about that as your computer will crash/BSOD before your processor "catches on fire" Same goes with malicious viruses, they could try to make your computer kill itself, but it would BSOD before it went to silicon heaven.

You can get malware that overvolts your CPU and ruins other things like spinning hard drive 100% non stop

Yes. Not likely, most likely you will have extra search bars added and horse porn pop-ups everywhere. :P

To prevent stuff like this:

I use Norton 360 as my anti-virus program that scans my computer 24/7.

Then I use Norton Power Eraser to scan and delete Malware (If I get any).

They can control things but I don't think they can push it past the safe limits. I'm pretty sure there are safeguards against accidentally putting too much voltage.

For starters, its really, really rare to get that kind of virus. Most effect data and OS stability. Antivirus and firewall are good start. Also common sense brings you far. Like don't download shady things or install just anything.

not when you push 10v through. That will probably instantly fry it and not give the motherboard a chance to shut down.

Did you even read what I said "I'm pretty sure there are safeguards against accidentally putting too much voltage" 

 

If there is a way to get around the safeguard or it doesn't exist, you should prove that. Not just say yea 10V will fry it.

I meant the safeguards won't react in time

It's not like you can change the voltage immediately, it takes steps and the safeguards have to be able to react in time. For example, if there were a power surge or something there are precautions put in place to prevent it from damaging the parts in the pc.
