260x vs 250x: will it really make that much of a difference?

Go to solution Solved by Prysin,

So, in another topic, I was talking about making my own server and such, and I decided the best chip to go with would be the amd athlon x4 860k (over the pentium I was offered). I need to couple it with a dGPU (I was going to anyway...), and I found two that are in my price-range. I kinda didn't go to far beyond the realm of 2013, so gtx 600 series and radeon hd weren't quite as looked through... And after looking at the gtx 750's pricing, I just said to heck with it. I'm going to keep choices down to 2.

Anyway, I am looking at a refurbished sapphire r7 260x (1GB GDDR5) and a new powercolor r7 250x (2GB GDDR5 <-- very important to take note of). The Sapphire is more expensive at $15 (after rebate), which made me wonder, is it really all that much better?

Experience or just speculation is welcomed. I also want to buy this thing soon, so I can catch the rebate it I do end up picking the 250x.

Thnx in advance.  :)

There is not a huge difference between the two in performance but if they are the same price or within $10-$15 of each other the R7 260X is definitely worth buying as long as it's the 2GB version. The 250X = HD 7770 and the 260X = HD 7790.

here you go. That is how much difference there is.

And if I did have to go with the 1GB version?

Save up for an extra week? The 260x is worth the extra money.

I wouldn't really want to limit myself to 1gb of VRAM for gaming these days...

Try reading my first sentence of the OP again. Not really for gaming. I suppose I could, but ehhh... whatever.

OK. I'll look around the bowels of the interwebs to find one... As it is, I want to spend the least amount possible on this thing.

Edit: though at $60, the r7 250x is a steal.

I must have missed that.....

What is it that you're using the server for / what is it running?

@djdwosk97: Hosting my own website and file hosting. Maybe some computation online or game hosting as well. It's a hobby machine.

Search didn't take too long. I'll just wait for this sexy looking thing to get back in stock. Hopefully the rebate lasts and I can get it for $80.

Why not go for an APU instead and save the money?

Re-read the first sentence (though it is a little less obvious). I was offered an AMD x4 860k or a pentium g3528, not I bought

ah, I just assumed you meant suggested by someone, not offered; alright then.

Well, since you're not doing anything all that graphically intensive (I don't think anyway -- I guess it would mostly depend what you mean by computation online), you could even pick up some dirt cheap gpu for $10-$15.

I'd just buy a crap GeForce 8400 GS or something if you take the 860k, or run off integrated graphics if you get the G3258.

I have the athlon and I can't get the pentium. The other guy already built his own system with it...  :\

I suppose. I have heard that GPUs are good for high-end math calculations, and I am might be putting a NodeJS sandbox for some friends on it. IDK If that is even GPU intensive, but hey.... can't hurt. And I can probably scavenge a cheap GPU from somebody I know for the time being. (While I do some more research...)
