is 3 ram sticks okay? or must be in pair?

I bought 2 kits of 4gb x2 sticks of ddr4 ram for my asus rampage v extreme but one stick was dead (which im getting replaced)

But for now, is it safe to use just 3 of those sticks? 

 

Black ops 3 seems to have memory problems, it takes over 8gb ram so i have to do this if i am to play black ops 3. Otherwise i would as i have until now just used 2 sticks.


Edit: My pc boots fine and the program speccy says i have 12GB ram now so, so far it seems okay.

if you are extreme overclocking, it's best to have one slot per channel, beyond that, you can do whatever you want and it should work perfectly, as long as you keep in mind that mismatched memory will run at the slowest speeds

Yeah it's fine, although sometimes it can cause blue screens if the ram sticks don't match, emphasis on sometimes.

yeah you could run 1x128GB stick + 3 1GB stick and it would work. probably wouldnt be optimal but yeah

Actually, on one of my DDR2 systems, I ran 1x512MB, 1x1GB, 1x2GB for some time that still appeared to work fine

Yes but I brought up haswell-e because some people think since it runs quad channel then it can't run triple while the others you mentioned are totally known for their max triple channel.

Nahalem is max triple channel, SB-E and IB-E are max quad channel too.
