oh dear... I was about to break into my usual rant about how everything bottlenecks everything else to some extent... but ooooooh, that's gonna be a nightmare of a bottleneck. You really need to upgrade your platform if you want to run that 980 to any degree of good.

 

i5-4460/6500, H97/170 motherboard. Problem solved.

The CP will bottleneck pretty heavily.

I would suggest upgrading it to an i5 4460, 4690K or similar. Maybe even Skylake if your budget allows for it.

That 980 will be bottlenecked by the CPU. If you want to keep your motherboard, I would get at least an 8320. Or switch to Intel with an i5 4460/6400

I got an Amd FX-4130 Quad-Core Processor running at 3.80 GHz. I have 8.00 GB of ram. A Ultra 500w PSU. I am planning to upgrade to a GTX 980 around Christmas time. Will I need to upgrade anything in order for the GPU to reach its full potential. Thank you.

Are you serious? He'll need a VERY stable motherboard, PLUS a good cooling system.
