Hi, I have a i5-4440 and I wanted to upgrade to a overclock-able CPU and wondered if I should step back a generation as I have heard it is cheaper and they are still extremely good CPU's. Thanks

Except newer CPUs are more powerful off the bat, more efficient, run cooler, thus higher overclock capability.  Why not get the most out of your investment?

Very true, hadn't thought of that, thanks! :)

Wouldn't recommend either. I'd wait until the next gen to do the upgrade. You won't get enough performance from overclocking to be worth the cost of the upgrade, especially if you don't have a z87/97 board to begin with.

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

I agree. Imo, there is no point in upgrading to Skylake atm, and by the time DD4 will actually matter, most of us will want to upgrade again anyway.

Whether upgrading to i5-4690k + OC supporting board is worth it depends on OP's goals and budget, but I kinda doubt.

Lmao, I'd believe posts like this if they actually upgraded, ever.  You guys keep saying, yeah, we'll upgrade next time around and don't.. What's the difference between your 3 years outdated i5(OP example) an 6 month out dated i7? More performance, lower power consumption, lower temps.  it's all, worth it.  If you care about your investment, MAKE IT THE SHIT AND TAKE PRIDE IN IT.

To upgrade either way is pretty pointless from what you have.

If you're craving some overclocking you can get an AM3+ board and there are loads of super cheap AM3 cpus you can overclock and sell off when you're done with.

Sorry, I don't follow. Are you suggesting that 'we' are using 8080's because 'we' never upgrade? The question wasn't about the difference between OP's current CPU and 5775C, The question was whether Haswell is still good for a modern machine and if the price difference between Skylake and Haswell is justified at this point of time. And currently performance-wise they are pretty darn close. 'We' also added, that CPU upgrade alone won't allow to utilize overclocking potential in either case, since proper motherboard and probably cooling are required to support it. So it's up to OP to decide, if they have the budget for extra parts.

Last but not least, I realize that different people value the worthiness of their investment differently. Some prefer to buy a new phone every two months, others are very happy with their 5 y.o. istone because it's more than enough for their needs. Both are fine. I hope you realize that too.

This is literally the most ignorant thing I've read on this forum for a long time. You do realize that Sandy Bridge still performs great in gaming right? What's the difference in fps between a 2500k and a 6600k in gaming?(yes using an old i5 and a new i7 to prove a point)

The difference isn't worth the cost of upgrading to me, or to many other ppl. Why? BECAUSE IT WORKS FINE! I don't plan on upgrading my i5 4690k until it no longer performs well enough to support the frame rate I want. So long as it isn't bottlenecking my graphics card, why the hell should I replace it. If it isn't broken, I don't fix it.

Just because I don't throw money away with each successive generation for miniscule gains in performance doesn't mean I don't upgrade. And there are a lot of ppl like me. In fact the people that constantly upgrade their hardware, those that think that the gains are "always worth it" are a very small minority

Some outdated "trash" such as the socket 370 Abit VP6 are worth spending money on due to its rarity. Especially if your saving hundreds of dollars due to what comes with it.

If money means nothing to you, you wouldn't mind just giving me some, right?

The thing is, most people only have a limited amount of money and don't want to spend on upgrades unless it gives a significant boost in performance. In this case, the boost in performance will be pretty low while a lot of money is spent. If you have enough money that you don't care about it, that's fine. But there are people who don't have that much money.
