Hey guys,

I'm new to building PC's, but I'm considering to get started on one. I've been pondering on what CPU I should buy. I don't really play any high end games that use a lot of the CPU's power, like Call of Duty or Crysis, I usually play games that don't use much power at all, like League of Legends and TF2, and I don't want to overspend money on a CPU that has more than I need. If you could recommend me anything, that would be nice. Thanks!

If you're on a mega budget the Intel G3258 is an awesome choice, it's only 70$ and can be overclocked (I got mine to 4.9GHz) and can be upgraded to an awesome processor like the i5-4660, i5-4690/k, or the i7-4790/k which are all amazing CPU's. If you have around 180$ I'd recommend going with the i5-4660, it's simply amazing for the price and puts a whoop on the AMD FX-8350.

Only problem with the G3258 is that it is a dual core so games requiring a quad core will run terribly.

I think only two games require quad cores at the moment and that would be Dragon Age: Inquisition and Far Cry 4. Other than that I believe a dual core will do. Being someone who at one point and time had a G3258 and a GTX 750ti and then a G3258 and a GTX 960 I can say that the G3258 never seemed to be much of a bottleneck and upgrading to an i3 only saw a performance increase of about 2-3FPS in intense titles like Shadow of Mordor and Battlefield 4.

The Pentium G3258 is great for lower end games, plus it's LGA 1150 so you can upgrade to something like a 4460 or 4590 if you want. For LoL and TF2 it should be more than adequate.

If you want to get serious with PC gaming, though, I'd recommend just getting an i5 straight off the bat.

Eh, I had a 780 Ti and a G3258 (I regret making that choice) at one point to and the CPU bottleneck was so massive that OCing the G3258 barely helped.

Well that is what happens when you put a high end card with a low teir CPU, you're bound to get a bottleneck. If OP only has a budget for a G3258 than he will not have the budget for a GPU that will be bottlenecked by the G3258.

Core i3s are really nice. They're not too expensive, they're very strong per core, which matters more than number of cores on esport type of games, they have high clockspeeds, and if you want to occasionally play Grand Theft Auto or Battlefield they can handle them too (not as well as an i5 could, but still decently). An i3-4170 for around $115 is a great deal.

But a G3258 isn't a bad way to go if you're absolutely sure you're just going to be playing TF2 and LOL. It's a terrible CPU for any kind of AAA gaming unless you're targeting 40 fps or less, since the vast majority of AAA games are optimized for quadcores now. Which is where the i3-4170 recommendation comes in above: it's kind of an imitation quadcore because of hyperthreading, but it's night and day better than a straight dual core Pentium in a game that wants four cores. But on LOL, on TF2, on old Call of Duty games (eg 2011 and before), on Crysis 1, it's very strong because you can overclock the living hell out of it even on a cheap board and the stock cooler. I got mine to 4.4 GHz on the stock cooler on a $50 H81 motherboard in the middle of summer in Texas when it was 100F every day. Basically it crushes any game optimized for the Core 2 Duo. It's really good for emulation too, since you'd have to step all the way up to a $240 i5-4690k to get better single thread performance.
