i don't think it has a specific reason. personally i like the sound of 'I5' much better than the sound of 'I8' tough.

There is no reason other than there were Core 2 and Core Quad cpu's before.

 

Intel switched to i naming scheme after other cores. I think they did that to avoid confusion at the time.

 

Core i3 was better than Core 2.

Core i5 was better than Core Quad.

i3 usually goes from *100 to *300
i5 usually goes from *400 to *600
i7 takes *700 and above

The other numbers are pretty much to place it based on clockspeed and iGPU


That only makes sense post-Haswell. Forget it :D
