CPU reaching 100% while playing

Hi everyone!

I have an issue with my computer, while playing borderlands 2, I noticed that when there were a lot of enemies, the framerate dropped and my CPU usage climbed all the way to 100%.
I know that this game is kind of old (2012) and I think that I might be CPU limited.
My CPU is an intel i5 650, my graphics card is a GeForce GTX 760.
What do you think?

yeah, i think the CPU is just old. 

 

it released back in jan. 2010.

We can't Benchmark like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to shove more GPUs in your computer. Like the time I needed to NV-Link, because I needed a higher HeavenBench score, so I did an SLI, which is what they called NV-Link back in the day. So, I decided to put two GPUs in my computer, which was the style at the time. Now, to add another GPU to your computer, costs a new PSU. Now in those days PSUs said OCZ on them, "Gimme 750W OCZs for an SLI" you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had two GPUs in my rig, which was the style at the time! They didn't have RGB PSUs at the time, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big green ones.

The i5 650 is kinda weak at this point but I'm not sure that it should be bottlenecking a 760.

I also didn't think that Borderlands was that CPU-intensive.

Yeah, it seems to be bottlenecked by weaker CPUs. I would upgrade. The 650 is old.

What are the full specs of the system? Including OS? The i5 is old but should have been able to do it I think.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

I think you should upgrade to 860K, FX-6300, i3-6100 or i5-4460?

 

Unless you find a better CPU for your current socket?! :D

No, it is quantifiably worse. Lower clock speed, lower IPC. The only price savings you will net is on the board and RAM (going with Haswell) and those differences are marginal.

I would say go Skylake - i5 6500 and a board that fits your budget. DDR4 isn't as expensive as it used to be and you can easily find some low frequency 8GB module on the cheap.

As for my GTX 760, do you think I'll need to replace it at the same time? Or can I play some games ( like star citizen) on medium or higher ?

 

I think it would be fine for medium settings, but it also depends on what resolution you are playing. If you have a 1080p then yeah, sure, it will do fine. But getting soemthing like a GTX 970 or GTX 980 in the future will be a good upgrade.

You could try to get an i7 for your current socket, sometimes they sell really cheap. Your 760 will do fine at medium 1080p
