I'm wondering if it would be worth it for me to get a 3rd party cooler for my Xeon 1231. I'm using an NZXT H440 that has sound dampening foam that would hopefully block out noise that would come from any cooler that I get. Would the stock cooler be very noticeable while I'm working on my computer?

The newer intel stock cooler is actually not that loud it's actually pretty quiet, especially at decent RPM's. So you'll be fine :)

I'm getting the Xeon 1231v3, For Editing and gaming. So I'm getting the 212 evo from Cooler master. Just for safe temps. I don't trust the Stock cooler.

The stock cooler I got with my i3 made me mod my case layout so I could use a tower cooler to have a quiet rig.

When I swapped cases and couldn't use that one anymore, I used the stock cooler for my i5. I ended up modding it to use a 120mm cooler. Since I wanted to run it at low RPM even during summer, I ended up buying a low profile cooler with a proper heatsink.

To answer your question, it all depends on you. If you bought a case to make your rig quieter, but you still use harddrives without any silencing boxes and don't mind the noise, the stock cooler will be fine.

If you run SSDs or dampen your harddrives, it could become the loudest fan in your rig.

You get the cooler for free, experiment with it and if you find it loud, just get a cheap 120mm heatsink.

I'd just try out the stock cooler first, and if you think it's too loud, then grab a Hyper 212 EVO later. No need to go with anything too expensive. I can't hear the CPU if I turn all my fans on the quiet setting in my BIOS, though when I'm gaming I have my GPU fans ramped up enough to be easily audible so maybe my CPU would be noticeable then if it wasn't getting drowned out by the sound of the GPU.

I guess if you absolutely want a whisper quiet system you can buy an NH-D15, that's supposed to be about the quietest cooler on the market and should last you forever. Don't mess with watercooling in an H440, the temps are lousy and you'll probably have to run your fans too high to try to compensate for how small the top exhaust vents are.
