980 vs 390x

cclau

I want to buy either a 390x or a 980, but I do not know which one. I am afraid that in the near future, games will need more than 4gb of vram. If it weren't for this, I would pick the 980 over the 390x, but I just don't know if the extra 4gb of vram will save me the upgrade in the future. Games like Shadow of Mordor make me afraid that the 4gb on the 980 will come back and bite me. I am planning to OC, so I know that the 980 will OC better and run cooler. Do you guys think that the extra vram will be needed or utilized in the near future, making the 390x better?

Whichever is cheaper

EDIT: So far 6-7 games use above 4GB of VRAM at 1080p.

390x might be a bit better.

Sapphire's cards usually run cooler than others.

Isn't extra Vram beter for 1440p and 4k? if the OP decides to upgrade monitor in the future?

even at 1080p - I've already shred through 3GB on multiple occasions - 4GB isn't that hard to use.

So from what everyone here is saying, I guess the 4gb is okay for now, but will not be enough pretty soon. I guess I'm going with the 390x then. Thanks everyone.

They trade blows in performance but 390x is a lot cheaper and has twice the VRAM amount so personally I would go for 390x.
