Glad Linus touched on the subject of Apple's innovation. I'm not sure if he has been reading our discussions on here (i'm sure he does, just not sure about this particular topic) and there have been some individuals here that have said similar things that while Apple doesn't INVENT everything, the definitely do innovate and bring add improvements to features in a compelling package.

When did they fall behind exactly? (aside from the who taking until the iPhone 5 to get 4g).

I've been using Android and iOS since Eclair and iPhone OS 1.0 and really....the two are basically the same for 99% of things.

 

imo iPhones have always led the "smartphone race" until the 5s. That's when competitors started matching a good smartphone experience. It wasn't till the 6 that Android phones started surpassing iPhones.

With the 5s, Apple really stepped up their hardware game and in that year, Samsung choked really hard on their S5 and the M8 was kinda disappointing. With the launch of the 5s, iOS was no longer really as optimized as before, favoring resource heavy animations and introducing a whole slew of features. The 6 was only a minor upgrade in terms of specs, which let the S6 overtake the iPhone overall. The 6s is Apple regaining the lead and showing other manufacturers how it's really done- fast cpu cores/ipc, fast graphics, fast storage, as well as the usual good camera under any situation, great screen, premium look and feel, attention to detail, etc. The 6s also proves to the world that there's no such thing as "fast enough"; there's the 6s, and then there's everything else, left in the dust.

What is wrong with putting the headphone jack at the top and putting a big or second speaker at the bottom instead?

All and all, looks like the phone will be pretty awesome for those who already buy and use product. Seems to deal with a lot of older iphone gripes.

imo the 4 and 4s were so far ahead of it's time that it was tough for even Apple to follow up. If it wasn't for the prevalence of LTE coverage and the introduction of LTE in the iPhone 5, I think a lot of people would have stayed a lot longer on the 4/4s.

 

For example, it took Samsung 2 years after the launch of the iPhone 4 to get it right with the introduction with the S3 and even then, the S3 had it's niggles. 

 

I'm not a big player of the spec game when it comes to smartphones. Do I care the Lumia has like 53 megapixels? Seeing how 90% of my photos will be compressed to Google photos or cropped to all else on instagram, I don't see any value in it. Do I care that someone fit a 4K display on a 5" screen? No, I can't even see that shit. Oh you have an octa core processor? cool.

 

Even with the 6s apparently dominating single threaded performance and implementing blazing fast storage, I don't really care. I don't care if it has a read speed of 500 billion megabytes per nanosecond. Or if it scores 20,000 on geekbench. All I care if the phone offers a competent experience for me. It doesn't matter to me how it does it.

 

I will agree with you that Apple did a good job with the 6s at combining all these features into one package. Android for years has beaten iPhones in singular categories but never all of them at once (M8 would have an incredible build but terrible camera, S5 would have a better screen and great camera but terrible build, etc). It wasn't until the latest group of Android phones that I think they finally starting to get the idea that it's a whole experience. S6, G4, the latest 6P (although I've yet to read reviews) are all aiming to become great all rounders.

 Hi! I have a few pointers for the editing and b-rolls. I've started to notice that in some videos that a screen shot or b-roll holds for too long without any movement or anything happening making me wonder if youtube glitched up or something. the second thing is that the b-roll didn't go that well with the rest of the review seeing that every time we saw the iPhone there were misclicks (or miss taps if you will) happening left and right, even when the force touch was shown it didn't do it justice making the footage feel sloppy and especially when you are praising the device it would make sense showing it work properly. Other then that great review!

They keep making the phone thinner instead of putting a larger battery in it, no micro sd card, no removable battery, etc...

I was thinking the same thing when i watched it, I have to explain this point every day, that innovation is not invention, but implementing existing tech into a device in a compelling and well engineered way

Go to Macrumors and you won't see anyone complaining about the battery life (They'll complain about nearly everything else). Seriously, I haven't seen a single other reviewer mention battery life other than Linus.

He has a different standard -- i.e. that it's a watch first, and therefore it shouldn't need such frequent charging.

Understandable, but I find it a tad unfair to harp on it as much as he does considering the watch does in fact last well over one day of use if I can't charge it at night (Thought that's not a problem since my watch stand charges it). If I did not have an Watch myself and only went by what Linus said, he makes it sound like the watch dies in three hours, which is definitely not the case. It's currently 1:50pm, I took the watch off my stand at 5am. It's at 92%.

It's probably worth adding that on the scale from A-G, all modern phones are between C-G. But considering I never once had an issue with my 5s (which is rated at the bottom of the list); and since the 5s wasn't known for having signal issues, I tend to believe the tests are largely irrelevant in real world performance.
