GTX 970 or R9 390?

CJ Chua

I plan to buy a GTX 970 because in DX11 there's a slight different in games. I'm not planning to go to Windows 10 because it bugs a lot. And I don't need the extra 4GB of frame buffer because I'm gonna play at 1080p. So.... 970 or 390?

970 runs generally cooler and i like nvidias software better but the 390 will still perform about 10% better in most use cases

390. Windows 10 isn't much more buggy than Windows 7 for me after doing a clean installation. DX12 will potentially bring huge performance gains.

Are you sure you're going to stay at 1080p? Higher resolution monitors offer an amazing gaming experience, and you can't discount DSR/VSR either.

Join the MSX train! Choo-choo!

OP, you should consider the R9 390. It will run hotter, but due to its superior compute performance to Nvidia's Maxwell cards (which makes a difference in DX12) it's definitely worth considering. Preliminary benchmarks of DX12 titles (not fully released, take it with a pinch of salt) show a strong favouring to AMD's hardware. That extra VRAM will also mean better performance when (and if) you increase the resolution of your games.

Personally, the only thing I like about Nvidia's software is the control panel. I fucking hate GeForce Experience, it keeps crashing on me.

However, you seem to have created this thread with your mind made up given how you have presented the question. If this is the case, the GTX 970 is still a very good card and you shouldn't be disappointed.

I want the features in GeForce Experience.

Edit: I'm much familiar with NVIDIA because I never used an AMD card before (no offense to AMD fanboys). And some point I think AMD software is not that good.

Then get the GTX 970. Were you asking for everyone's opinion or were you just looking for validation of your choice?

Also, what features? Besides Shield, I don't think there's anything special about GeForce Experience.

Pretty much every features. Like shadow play, and I remember a feature is something about streaming without dropping frames I believe. That could be useful.

The features.

Nvidia have Geforce Experience. AMD have AMD Gaming Evolved aka Raptr

Nvidia have Nvidia Control Panel. AMD have Catalyst Control Panel

Most of the stuff, like 95%, is the same across the two.

The software is good. I've had no issues since. I've had Nvidia GPUs for last 3 years. I wanted to see what AMD can offer. I'm not disappointed. The 7950 is solid for me in 1080p

I've overclocked it as well:

R9 390 or a R9 290X if you can find it (It's better, but it's hotter and has less VRAM, 4GB is still more than enough though) If you don't mind heat then it's better. Provided you find it for around the same price the 290X is slightly better. There also are 8GB versions.
