I'm back again with more questions; I was going to get the XFX R9 390 but then found out it won't fit in my case, this then made me question what to do as I can't find a sapphire card and the MSI one doesn't really fit my colour scheme.

I then found the EVGA Superclocked ACX 2.0 970 which does fit my colour scheme.

There's also the factor of power, although I should have enough for the 390 its right on the limits meaning I can't really add more in later down the line, the 970 on the other hand will give me a lot more room to upgrade later on.

But then I'm getting half the VRAM so it's a difficult decision.

What would you do?

the 390 is much better than the 970

it's not much better, only very slightly better. Vram flexibility is the biggest difference. (though FC4 is definitely the poster-child of the 390)

If you're gaming at 1080p or less, you can just go for the 970.

Just because it has more VRAM doesn't mean it's gonna be heaps better, in this case anyways

The R9 290/290X/390/390X are all meant for 1440p and 4K. At 1080p the GTX 970 is the sweet spot.

If gaming is the main focus of your PC, I would invest more on the GPU.

Looking at your signature, that's probably a better idea. Get an i5 and a new motherboard.

Yeah, I expect the 970/390 would be bottlenecked to the point where I may as well have a 380 anyway.

Might be the best way forward.

I didn't see that, and taking into consideration the clock speed not the extra 2 modules, these are the best GPU for an FX CPU at the relevant clock speed:http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/amd_fx_8370_and_8370e_processor_review,3.html

Some 290s are going for pretty cheap.

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-video-card-r9290aedfd

Now that's not too bad at all. *sigh* I still don't get why the USD is as high as it is with the country in trillions of dollars of debt.

Nope, thats untrue.

The 980Ti which is proved to be a lot more powerful than all the AMD Cards you mention still struggle at 4K resolution

Same performance and price bracket. The 980ti is totally irrelevant to the discussion at hand.

Let's just hope we get a yield higher than 4GB.

Thanks to the tech and speed of HBM, 4GB are plenty for 1440 and enough for 4K - the files spend most of the times in transit and thanks to the blazingly fast memory they don't really stutter as much. Now - it's more than possible to overload the 4GB of HBM but it's a lot harder than overloading the 6GB of the 980 Ti. Normal Fury CF is about the level of a 980 Ti SLI @ 4K - Fury X CF pulls ahead by a decent margin.

Another fun fact - thanks to the extremely low latency HBM has over GDDR5, VR is a lot better on it and causes less nausea - hence why some VR demos were ran on Fiji even before Fury X's release.

Funnily enough - at 4K, the Fury X comes out on top of the 980 Ti by a few fps. Fiji is a 4K platform - hence why 2x Fury Xs steamroll past 2x 980 Tis at 4K

I was trying to keep the discussion about graphics cards that aren't in the same price bracket as the FuryX and 980ti.

It'll be interesting to see how Nvidia uses HBM on their graphics hardware in the future. A yield of 6GB or more would be preferable.
