School Folding project Questions

I would like to start a folding team for my school and start folding but i've been thinking that i could get people to donate there old pcs to the school and have a room filled with computers running Folding@Home. The only problem is I don't know where to cut off the specs minimum. I was thinking at least a core 2 duo @2.8ghz but is that too low performance foir the heat thats its outputting. But i'm not sure. Where should i cut of the specs minimum?

Core2duo sound about right, but you would need to just test one out and see if it can even complete the work unit within the allotted time.

Do you think running at lot of computers in one room will cause them to overheat even with air conditioning on?

I would just open a window. My AC sucks at keeping up with my folding, but my single PC draws 450 watts...

out of legality you can't do this at a public school unless you have coordination with the school board or you can get disciplinary action, trust me.

I would get permission from the school board. I wouldn't do it with out their approval right now it's just an idea.

I would get permission from the school board. I wouldn't do it with out their approval right now it's just an idea.

Once, I gave a try at using my University's 50 workstations (8 core-16 thread Xeons with Kepler Quadro GPUs) for Boinc during free time - basically, overnight. I only got anywhere after I got support from one of my teacher that has a personal Tesla based server..... Even then, I only got access to the 51th PC, which was stored in a box and wasn't physically installed / being used. And to think that the 52th computer is still stored, they didn't assemble it for me to use the thing.

 

So good luck. You'll need it. And be prepared to fail miserably, otherwise your soul might shatter.

 

Just don't give up. I suggest you also try Boinc, so you can get support by the Math teacher using PrimeGrid, the Biology / Chemestry teachers via World Community Grid, and much more.

well i'm in high school so we don't have 50+ workstations with xeons. but we have the largest marching band in the state!

Hahaha I am doing the same thing. I am in the process of finishing the infrastructure and installing windows 7. I will gladly add 36 computers folding to the LTT Team

As mentioned, make sure you get permission. 

 

For the older systems, say less then second gen Core ix system, you could always fold using the Chrome Client on those systems. Much smaller WU's and they don't produce near the amount of heat of the main client. And you can run it at low/med/high, so you can test and see that it isn't overheating the system. On newer units, slap on the full client. 

 

On any system, just make sure it has a decent intake and exhaust fans and position systems properly. Don't have PC's laided out so some exhaust their heat in the direction of the intakes of others. That won't help. :)
