Voltage Question

Hello,

Im overclocking my 3930K, cooled with Thermaltake Frio Advanced.

 

So far I got a stable clock of 4.4GHz @ 1.4V, but CPU-Z is showing me 1.34V when I torture test it. When its idle its going up to 1.4V.

Should I push the BIOS voltage to 1.45 maybe so I can squeeze some more performance out of this?

P.S. - Also Task Manager in Windows 10 is giving me speeds up to 6.5GHz, whats up with that?

After 1.35 is unknown territory so you go by your own risk. With air I wouldn't go past 1.375 not to mention 1.45V. Check the boot voltage and eventual, maybe you placed the boot one and eventual is on auto if you have that option

1.4v is too much

Well I've found out sources claiming that 1.4 is the max safe voltage for this CPU, stated by Intel.

So what the heck... :D

Don't air coolers can't handle it

1.4V is fine. If you're running a custom loop/watercooled you can push for 1.45V tops. Wouldn't like to go higher than that for that processor. 

 

4.4GHz is low for 1.4V i think. 4.6GHz-4.7GHz is usually where the clock should be for that Vcore range. 

 

just make sure the temps are good.

Yeah, I know... but when I torture test it the voltage drops for some reason, can't figure out why! (CPU-Z)

I cant find settings in my bios to tweek this.

That's Vdroop. Every CPU and GPU encounters the voltage dropping. It isn't harmful but can be annoying if you want to find a stable overclock. 

 

Look for LLC or Load Line Calibration in the BIOS and try setting it to a higher setting and see if it drops less. The higher LLC might help you get a little bit more out of your chip since it operates closer to that voltage. Or well that's my theory anyway.

My friend didn't know he was changing the CPU voltage and had been running stock speeds at 1.475V for over 2 years. It is the AMD 8 something CPU
