Note: The card is almost guaranteed to overclock because that is what the series was made to do

Yeah I see no reason to have a king pin as one card with a fancy heatsink and Vram =/= 2 cards

Get the hof, it's aftermarket cooling is superb for so little markup from the reference. Plus you get an SSD for free.

i would get the MSI Gaming 6G because IMHO it looks awesome and MSI FTW!

MSI also has the watercooled SeaHawk now which is also quite nice IMHO:

If you want the straight best out of the box 980ti there is that is air cooled IMHO this would be the 12 phase 980ti lightning from MSI:

That thing has 2x 8pin and 1x 6pin power plug and it's awesome for overclocking.

This lightning is a super binned chip guaranteed to reach the highest overclocks there is out there, this thing is built from the ground up with overclocking in mind and MSI's best chips are on this card...

The 980 ti kingpin is $850 for the lowest ASIC, what are you smoking lol?

The kingpin is hands down the best 980 TI, just terrible in terms of price to performance.  But if we're talking about "best" bar none, then it's definitely the KP.

800$ and the GPU is binned super high, chances for this to overclock better than even the kingpin are IMHO at least 1/2

The Lightning has pretty poor support for XOC and doesn't come with Samsung VRAM, the memory clocks much higher on the KP.

KP is completely ready out of the box for whatever you want to do with it, and has a massively indepth overclocking guide on Kingpin's forums.

no idea what XOC is and the VRAM wont affect performance much what you want is a solid card with solid power delivery and nicely binned chip and this is one of them.

And this ''indepth overclocking guide'' for the kingpin will work totaly the same on the MSI card and you will reach the same performance level for MUCH less bacon ($$$)

i own a simple ''gaming'' series card which is MSI's first bin (not the basic chip but only one step higher) and my card is a 79.6% asic quality. The 980ti Gaming 6G i assume would be ''great chips'' ranging from 70% to 80% and the lightning will be 80%+ for most i'm sure.

MSI has the Gaming LE where they trow the 70% or bellow chips.

Those prices for the kingpin BTW IMHO won't make any sense what so ever ;)

Source?

Check Kitguru's review: (This definitely isn't an LE model)

http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/luke-hill/msi-gtx-980-ti-lightning-6gb-review/15/

And this member review here on LTT:

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/451593-just-got-the-980ti-lightning-to-test-out/

In both cases you can see they're struggling to push mid 1400 and higher.

There are other suspect signs such as the backplate not contacting the card other than at the screw mounts. (Again KitGuru review above).

I'm wondering whether or not the Lightning is even binned - I'm tempted to get one but at this stage it's looking like the KP is easily the better choice, given its not that much more expensive here.

The prices aren't meant to make sense, it's for extreme overclocking. (That's what XOC is, since you mentioned you didn't know.)

VRAM does help, not a lot but it does.

I did not see that OP said 800$, I just saw "best 980 ti", my apologies for that @Enderman and @i build nanosuits

And no, the indepth overclocking guide won't work, because it involves an engineering BIOS that only works on the KPE, as well as things about memory heater, vdroop switches and other tips and tricks.

Here is the guide:

wat about EVGA's ''step-up'' program? is that still a thing? any way the OP could upgrade to a pascal GPU when those come out? this would be A GOOD REASON to invest more in an EVGA GPU...

I think the step-up thing only lasts for 90 days, pascal comes out in like 8 months or something right?

fair enough, but how much performance delta are we looking at assuming you get a bad lightning that can only do 1450mhz VS an amazing kingpin assuming you paid the premium  and get something that can clock 1550mhz?! maybe a couple % here and there at the best?

i would pick the one that is priced right and match the look of the system...but the kingpin looks good with everything i'm not arguying against EVGA they have the best customer support and the kingpin has good cooling...i'm just saying MAYBE it's not worth the extra $$$ over a gaming 6G from MSI or a SSC from evga...that's all.

reason i'm here is im shopping for MAYBE a 980ti as well...but i'll likely wait for next gen chips before i make a move but who knows...1000$ a 6g over here so....yeah :)

it's a HUGE difference. It makes it clock for clock faster than the Titan X, no other 980 Ti has the glory of that crown.

It has tighter timings than any of the Hynix offerings and ofc unlike Hynix actually scales with voltage on ambient and LN2..

Compare 2000mhz Hynix to 2000mhz Samsung, It's around a 500 point difference in Firestrike. (inb4 omg synthetic omgmggggmgmgmgmgmgmgm, It's a card built for synthetic benchmarks at this point, lol.)

PEWDIEPIE DONT CROSS THAT BRIDGE

I haven't seen a 980 TI Kingpin that couldn't bench at 1520 or higher yet with over 8000 on the mems, even the low ASIC ones.   People getting the 80%+ ones I have seen hitting over 1600 mhz on watercooling, around 1560-1590 on air.  Insane performance, but obviously costs a lot and it's not really worth for gaming unless you're filthy rich and don't care about the extra $300 or so you spend on that high ASIC card.

I agree with you fully it's not worth the extra $ unless you have the extra $ to spend and want "the best", because it is :P

About the performance delta, probably 5 FPS, maybe 10 at the very most if the cards were like 1450|7600 for Lightning and 1550|8200 on Kingpin.

If his budget is $800 without sacrificing $ on other things, Lightning is definitely the way to go, it's a beast card.  Just not quite on the same level as the KP.

Just sayin :P

it's a HUGE difference.

(inb4 omg synthetic omgmggggmgmgmgmgmgmgm, It's a card built for synthetic benchmarks at this point, lol.)

just saying...but from the reviews i've seen so far PRETTY MUCH ANY 980ti with proper cooling (AKA pretty much any 980ti with two fans or more) will be able to outpaste the titan X...with a slight overclock...the cuda core count isnt much different enough that a 200mhz boost couldn't outblow...so even a basic card like the zotac amp can beat a titan X reference with slight overclock...just saying :L)..unless the titan X is watercooled.

if we set a MAX cap at 800$UDS for the card, IMHO this one remain the best:

or this one;

the kinpin is over budget...

EDIT: MSI even has the ''lightning LE'' now which means the real lightning cards should be PRETTY awesome...just saying:

maybe the early samples tested wherent that great, but i would take a gamble for this card if the budget and a yeallow/balck card would allow...

in the end, i would settle for one of these depending on the color scheme:

BTW, just for the record, i would ALREADY own one of these cards if the prices in canada would be anything similar...this is the card i look to acquire...it's 849$ and its not even that great it has a loud lazy cooling solution and it won't even match my system..849$ :(

This is the card that would make me really happy...1000$ with tax and shipping, same cost as my amazing monitor i bought a couple weeks ago:
