Intel Core i5-2500K Vs Intel Core i5-4440/4570/4690

So I'm having friends help my put together a build this time and one of them recommended I should go with a 2500K and Overclock the crap out of it.

Now I wanted to go with a Locked 4th Generation i5 but they didn't like that Idea.

The only reason I wouldn't go with a 2500K is due to the platform being old and finding a decent motherboard is a pain and I'm honestly not sure if it's worth the money to go with a LGA 1155 cpu at this time..

So what do you guys think?

Let me know!

Thank you!

BUDGET : $700-$800

Intel Core I7 7820X | Asus Rampage VI | Gigabyte RX 580 XTR | 32GB Crucial Ballistix | NZXT Kraken X62

ADATA XPG 256GB PCIe| Cosmos C700P CM | Lepa MaxPlatinum 1050W

i5 4460 is about 20% faster than a 2500K stock. You can match a 4460 with a 2500K but a 4690K is a better chip once OCed.

Well they think If I pair a R9 390 Or GTX 980 I might bottleneck due to the i5 being locked and non-overclockable

i5 4460 is fine with a Titan X :D

The i5 2500k can stomp any modern locked i5. And it still OCs better than most K versions of newer chips. With that said, the newer ones have better IPC, but not that better. In gaming, there is no difference 90% of the time. :)

Why not just buy a 4690k? Im still running my 2500k.They are great overclockers but I wouldnt suggest buying one now unless you can get one cheap.

I sent them to read this article from PcPer

That's what made me want a locked i5 lol

Yeah I heard SandyBridge is the best Overclocking Cpu's from intel

Budget wont allow a 4690K

the 2500k is oooooold. Still a great CPU, but hard to find boards for them nowadays unless youre going used. Id personally go with 4th gen locked (or unlocked if they can afford it)

When in doubt, re-format.

Yeah I heard SandyBridge is the best Overclocking Cpu's from intel

About 90% will hit 5GHz and A LOT of them even hit 6GHz with good water cooling. That tells you everything. :D

But I agree with the rest, unless you can get them really cheap, I wouldn't. Just get a newer locked one if the price difference is negligible.

I'm still running my i5 2500k and plan to do so until Zen or Intels 10nm, I still see no reason to upgrade, nor will my GPU be bottlenecked due to the fact that it's mid range. :)

probably a better idea to go with a locked 4460. boring but.. it the smarter choice.

Or I could just go with AMD... I mean I do have a AM3+ board coming back from RMA in a few days.

Sure it'll perform ok, but that doesn't mean an overclocked 6600K or 6700K won't walk all over it in terms of saturation/fps.

You guys just keep repeating the same lines so often that you don't stop and question yourselves on what you're saying. You don't hit some magical "balance". Faster CPU's will always squeeze out more drawcalls than with mid-grade CPU's with fast GPU's . Just how shit works...

It's probably not worth buying a 2500K unless you can find someone selling the CPU and motherboard as a pair for a decent price. If you can find a seller i would definitely recommend going that route. That's what i did about a year ago and i've been running the chip at stock with no need to even overclock it. One of the locked haswell chips will do just fine as well.

i have a 2500k @ 4.5Ghz, should i upgrade to 6700k?

That's a question to ask yourself, Do you need the extra performance? With a high end single GPU and a 2500K @4.5Ghz you should be just fine in terms of gaming.

I can get a 2500K for around $150 USD and I can get a Locked i5 for around $160+ USD and a 3570K for around $170 USD

Well I need all these things :

Cpu

Motherboard - (Only for Intel, Already have a AMD Motherboard)

Memory

HDD Or SSD

Gpu

Budget is between $700-$800 USD

I would like to build something and not have to update for the next 3-4 years

Just as an example... i did a build back in 2014 and I ended up with this:

CPU: i5 2500k oced to 4,2GHz (120euro)

Motherboard: Gigabyte z68ma-d2h-b3 (50)

CPU cooler: Coolermaster hyper TX3 (20Euro)

RAM: Kingstone 1333MHT 8GB (70euro)

GPU: Gigabyte R9 280 oc: 1100MHz (208euro)

PSU: Seasonic 600w 80%Bronze (60euro)

HDD: western digital 7200rpm 1TB (65euro)

Case: SOme crappy case for 25euro.

Total cost of 618 euro.

In my opinion, you could make a similar build with some changes, like... getting an r9 380 4GB and a locked SB or IB i5 cpu and than overclock it (you can overclock those cpus, because, they are partially unlocked and you can go up to 4 multiplier steps (with asrock z68/z77 boards up to 8 steps  giving you effectively 400-600MHz (combined with a 103-105 base clcok) overclock). Locked cpus are cheaper if you can find some second hand.

The 2500k and 3570k are still very decent for gaming. With overclocking headroom, its still can be more/as powerful as i5-6600 stock.

However, this is good only if you already have the CPU or could get it very cheap, and a decent motherboard. If you have nothing in hand, better just go with lga1150 its newer technology
