GTX 970 or R9 380

I am looking at the GTX 970 and the R9 380. Which one should I get, or should I get something better. I am going to be playing games like Battlefront, The Witcher 3 and GTA5 and max settings. All help is appreciated, thank you.

GTX970

if not aim for the R9 390 which is the same budget as the 970

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

You should be comparing a 390 and a 970, the 380 isn't even in the 970's price range.

- CPU: Intel i7 3770 - GPU: MSI R9 390 - RAM: 16GB of DDR3 - SSD: Crucial BX100 - HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB -

Why a 380, it isn't in the same league as a 970. A 390 vs 970 is a better comparison and the 390 wins in most cases.

You want to consider the 390 vs 970.

You buy the 970 if:

  • It's substantially cheaper either in direct price (ex you can afford a R9 380 or GTX 970 but 390s are more expensive where you live, then you buy the 970) or because you barely have any headroom with your PSU and going with the GTX 970 saves you the expense of a new PSU
  • You have nVidia specific devices (Shield, G-Sync) or really like Shadowplay
  • You have software (rendering, etc) that really benefits from CUDA

Otherwise 390 all day.

According to your current build you have a 390, or am I missing something?

I apologize guys, I meant the R9 390, thank you for all the help.

In that case a 390 will suit you more for want you're wanting, a 390 runs a lil better than a 970 and it has more VRAM and it runs way better in Battlefront.

Definitely go with the MSI R9 390 Gaming http://www.amazon.com/MSI-R9-390-GAMING-8G/dp/B00ZGF0UAE/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1444795528&sr=1-1&keywords=r9+390. It is a better option in every way. The only reason you would really want to go with the GTX 970 is if you want to use NVIDIA only features (G-sync, 3D Vision, ShadowPlay, etc.) Otherwise, R9 390 is faster, cheaper, has more VRAM, and still has Freesync among other comparable features that NVIDIA offers.

Intel Core i7-8700K @ 4.8GHz | Corsair H110i GTX | EVGA RTX 2080 XC | Asus ROG Maximus XI | Intel M.2 nVME SSD 1TB | Samsung 850 EVO 2X2TB | 32GB G.SKILL Trident Z 3200MHz CL14 RAM | EVGA SuperNova GS 1050W | Kept cool & quiet in a Fractal Design Define R5 Window with all Noctua fans

(G-sync, 3D Vision, ShadowPlay, etc.)

Well, AMD has FreeSync and stuff, which is just as good, if not better. Only reason to buy a 970 is for Shadowplay, I will admit ShadowPlay is quite nice but I don't think every boy and his dog are recording gameplay.

Both are good but 390 is better.

And it looks like the gap will widen in 2016.
