Upgrade from a potato to something new

Go to solution Solved by incarnate,

yeah thank you for all the advice, cant believe how quick this forum and people here response to posts.

After reading the information from you guys , i think i will go 4790k with a z97. With some extra money, i might purchase a better cooling devices :) .

Btw , talking about the pricing which you guys may interested. In Hong Kong, most of the hardware are relatively cheaper than other Asian country and some NA area. For example, i7-6700k is priced around $470 CAD in Hong Kong while in NCIX is priced $490 CAD ,4790k is priced aronud $425 CAD in HK while in NCIX is priced $440 CAD. However, it apply oppositely on software, like OS, Adobe's.

HK :

  • i7-6700k + Z170a gaming m5 = $470 + $277 = $747 CAD
  • i7-4790k + Z97-Pro gamer = $425 + $186 = $611 CAD
NCIX:
  • i7-6700k + Z170a gaming m5 ( Bundle ) = $800 CAD
  • i7-4790k + Z97-A ( Bundle ) = $650 CAD << Cant find the same MOBO

Definitely go with the 4790k. With the money you save, you can get a better graphics card which can be useful if you're programs can use it. Besides, the 4790k will easily last you years

Hey everyone , i am Bear from Hong Kong and i would like you guys to give me some ideas and suggestions for planning my new PC .
(I am not a native English speaker ,Sorry for any mistakes)

So the story is, i am using my potato PC for 3 years and since there will be ( there are, actually ) some college works coming which mostly related to 3D-modelling and probably a little bit of video editing ( plus some gaming of cos ), i am pretty sure my potato PC will become chips PC if i force it to do those works. That's why i am here to beg for some advice.

Old PC spec : Just don't even ask about my old PC , it is a 32-bits potato with a E3400 CPU. Yup it is a low level office PC.

I have two potential PC bases in my mind,
1) i7-6700k + Z170A Gaming M5
2) i7-4790k + z97-pro Gamer
(If GPU is necessary for just thinking about the build, then assume it will be a R9 270x 2G)

People always argue about how less the 6700k different from 4790k ( from what i saw on the Internet ) ,so i wonder in the area of 3D-Rendering, which base should i go with and why? Or is there any better base you can think of (in terms of cost / effectiveness) ?

p.s. Future proof may take place in the consideration.

It's going to come down to how much each system would cost for you in Hong Kong. If the prices are close, go with Skylake. If you'd have to spend a lot more for Skylake, go with Haswell.

I will mention that while Skylake doesn't make a very big performance difference in games, the difference is greater in more CPU-bound and memory-bound tasks. In some workstation applications, the difference is often a lot greater. But I don't know much about 3D rendering applications.

http://techreport.com/review/28751/intel-core-i7-6700k-skylake-processor-reviewed/11

There's some 3D rendering benchmarks here, but just be aware if they aren't using the same software you do that these benchmarks may not mean very much.

I5/I7 or xeon (skylake or brodwell, either one if fine) something like a 4690K

a z97 mobo or a z170 one depending if you go with skylake or not, also just a side note, if you go with a M-ATX mobo it might be a bit cramped for expantion but it opens up a whole new world of cases.

970/980 any here is fine

8 or 16gb of ram

a nice SSD something like a samsung 800 series one

a 1 or 2 TB HDD

a win10(or os of your chosing) key

a case that you like

and that should be it, should smash games in 1080p and be still nice in 1440p and still capable of 3D modeling/video eddeting

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

First off, I loved the chips pc joke. Nice clever word play. You're better at English than you think :)

Now on topic, I would recommend the 6700k if the price for the mobo, ram, and cpu is comparable to the 4790k set up. However if you can't afford ddr4 ram, then just go with the 4790k. The 4790k will work very well for it.

If you do go with the 4790k try and get a better gpu than the 270x if you can. It is a decent mid range gpu, but a 280 or 380, or gtx 960 would be much better. Keep in mind, I'm not familiar with Hong Kong pricing so these might not b as close in price for you as it is here in north America.

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

NCIX:
