well 290x IS better than 970 but only just and not worth the trouble of swapping IMO

Problem is i'm a student, so I don't have the budget to upgrade every year.

I was wondering if the 290X would last more than the 970...

Well..you already have a 970,

unless you are lucky enough to find someone to do a straight trade you are still going to be out of pocket more money for a 290x

If you save said money put it to an r9 490/gtx 1070 and sell the 970 to help pay off the new card when it comes out.

I mean you are already entertaining the idea of dropping money on a card...its just if you do it now or a few months time.

Hi! I have a mildly overclocked GTX 970 (1580Mhz core)

After seeing all the Directx12 thing, Asynchronous computing, Battlefront Benchs and all that stuff i'm wondering if I should change it for a 290X or maybe a 390 while I can.

Thoughts? :P

Nah, not really worth the upgrade. I can tell you that my 290 is great, almost as fast as your 970, but in some games it really likes to stutter more than Nvidia cards despite it's 'great DX12 performance'. I was going to save up like $50 and trade in my 290 for a 290X, but it's better to wait for Pascal, if all the rumors that it's compute power is 10x that of Maxwell are true.

No. What he's saying is that Pascal will be the card that will last you longest. You just have to wait like the rest of us.

If you can swap without any money loss, then I'd say do it. BUT if there is any loss of money then I'd say, don't bother.

What? No, the 290X are hot cards, require more power and fail more due to overheating.

Source? Those GPUs are specifically designed to handle the kind of heat they put out, why would they fail because of it?

Good thread. I had no idea about the 1000 series or the 490x and googled them both. All articles state 2016 early release. OP should heed advice here already said and wait a few months. If anything, the price of current cards should drop a bit when the next wave comes out (in theory?)

You all just helped me with my choice as well. I was gonna go AMD and try freesync out now but why go through the trouble of selling my 970s for a fury now when new tech is on the horizon.

And one person hit it right on the head. Are we playing ANY Dx12 games today?? I don't think I am :-)

Not better than a 1580mhz 970. Not by a long shot.

Well, a stock 290x certainly wouldn't be better than a 1580mhz 970.

Those rumors sound like a load of BS.

And i agree, it is rather pointless to swap to a 290x, they will be about the same performance. The 970 will last you a while, im quite satisfied that i will be good for a few years with my 280x, obviously turning down some settings.

290X matched a 980 in Battlefront and that was DX11. I think it's worth, @Morgan MLGman did the same and he's happy as we speak.

@Doughnutnator @don_svetlio yes that's true, I did swap my MSI GTX 970 Limited Edition to a MSI R9 290X, I see performance increase of 15 FPS in some games (Tomb Raider for example), my 8350+290X setup beat my flatmate's 4690k+970 setup in Shadow of Mordor Benchmark by 9 FPS average and by 10 min fps with the same settings.

The only thing I can tell you is that if you don't plan on watercooling it, look for a 3-fan version from Sapphire preferably, the Vapor-X is the best one, the slightly worse one but still very good is Tri-X. These chips can get really hot.
