Radeon r9 390 8gb vs GTX 970

lior1111

390 is better, but if you are like me you might use something like, Blender, for example, which only supports CUDA, so just make sure of stuff like that.

Please explain how the 390 is better. Better at what? Gaming? It's not.

Core I7 5960X / Gigabyte X99 SOC Force / Kingston 16GB DDR4 3000 / EVGA GTX 980 Classified's In Quad SLI / EVGA 1600W G2

Look closely - everything from 1440p to 5K - the 390 is a better card. Just give up already - we've had this discussion several times

Better card at what stock clocks? 4K? If going 4K I agree a 390 is a better choice but below that I'd take an overclocked 970 any freaking day

What res will the op be gaming at? If its not 4K or 1600p why link those benchmarks?

Why do you all always post that video? Jay couldn't overclock his way out of a paper bag. Stock clock benches are useless when the 970 can go from 12xx Boost Clock to 1550 Boost Clock with 1 click.

You'll be lucky to go from 1050 core to 1150 core with a 390.

but i saw benchmarks even with 1080p that shows the cards are pretty much identical , 970 might be better with overclock but its not something im too familiar with =/ dont wanna mess somethin up

A large amount of people getting 1200 core and an OC is by no means guaranteed. I am sorry but JayzTwoCents is a LOT more reputable than a random fanboy on the internet.

Even at 1080p the 390 is better.

Thankfully, you're in luck, because it's pretty much impossible to kill maxwell (or any modern card) with overclocks unless you REALLY try.

A guy killed his 980 Ti Kingpin just by switching to the OC bios. It can happen very easily.

Here's my problem with all the benches linked showing stock 970 clocks. My 970 gaming had stock clocks at 1253 Boost Clock and 1753 memory. It took me 5 minutes to take that card to 158x Boost Clock and 2000 memory. 5 freaking minutes. Now you want to say the 390 beats it at stock clocks at anything over 1080p? Fine but what about at max overclocks? Gladly show me overclock vs overclock numbers and I'll never disagree again.

I saw that post, and he didn't kill it, it was a firmware error.

IIRC it was a dead card.

They're the same. Not much of a difference. Even when OC'd.

970 - 1516/8002

Its more "unlucky".

Both cards have nearly Identical performance. OC'ed or not. You can't go wrong with either one.

For reference, here's a video where the 970 and the 390 have pretty weak overclocks. You'll find that they have really similar performance

very similar performance overall, the 390 is around 4% better overall...i'd pick the one you think is best OP they trade blows from game to game at 1080p.

At higher resolutions and/or if you have plans on going dual GPU's later the 390 is a clear winner though. or if you have plans to pick a freesync monitor which can be significantly cheaper than the gsync counterpart.

that seem to be the case from the informations i've gathered as well...consulting other forums also lead to this conclusion, but this forum strangely convinced one another that the 970 was noticeably ''weaker'' and that the 980 was ''a lot'' better than the 970 (which is not the case the 980 is like 12-15% better...)the 970 still hold well against the 390 and the results depend on the games and settings being used. They are similar GPU's, both get acceptable driver support and feature sets.

do not forget that the 390 has shown splendid performance in DX12..

also, as we saw with the release of hte 900 series... Nvidia is willing to nerf its old hardware with drivers to make the new hardware look better.

While they did it once, and got A LOT of flak for it. There is no saying if they are willing or planning to do it again....

On stock the 390 has the edge. No doubt about it. When someone asks which and will never want to play with overclocks then I'll point to the 390. But when you bring overclocking to the equation, they'll have nearly identical performance. So in the end it just boils down to which card is cheaper.

how hard could it be to push a slider within MSI afterburner, come on...every gamer on this forum is overclocking the GPu a little it's comon sense...who run those things at stock for more than 10 minutes for real? it's so easy a 3 year old can do it!

You'll have to ask them for that. I only know, I don't run my cards on stock clocks.

look , im not stupid but im very cautious! ive seen cases that ruined the card and as long as i wont need to in order to run smooth 55-60 fps i dont think i will overclock.

Although , its just a matter of time until ill give it a first try ;)

So , about the R9 , about the manufacturers , is there a favorite ? Im thinking between MSI or ASUS :P i saw MSI got a really nice heat preventing stuff though..

Not all 970s can hit that. My EVGA GTX 970 SC ACX 2.0 is only good to 1430 MHz on GPU Boost 2.0 (that's after setting boost clock to 1367 MHz) even though the temps never get out of the 60s. Any higher than that and I get occasional driver crashes in games. I'm not going to put a new BIOS on and void my warranty.

I'd stay away from Asus on GPUs, their 200 series cards were awful and some 970 Strix owners here are unhappy too. The MSI Gaming R9 390 is great though, they really beefed up the cooling. Sapphire cards are always really well designed too.

I ran my G1 Gaming at 1.3v at 1580+mhz for a good part of 6 months before resetting the bios and selling it a friend to upgrade to a 980ti.  It's amazing at how much you can push them.

Also price point wise, a good 390 is around 10-30 dollars cheaper than a G1 Gaming 970 depending on the manufacturer.  So really, it's up to what you want in a card/services from other things, such as freesync/gsync or gameworks.

MSI, definitely.  Twin Frozr is a good cooler.  Sapphire is generally considered really good, they're like EVGA but AMD-side.
