GTX 970 vs R9 390

Subduck
Go to solution Solved by Sammael,

This is the most confusing topic i have ever started...

It's actually not so bad.  The people telling you to get the 970 are advising you to buy a slower card for the same money, that already does worse on average than a 390 today in dx11, and with a gap that will almost certainly widen with more dx12 titles.

The reason they do this is because they love nvidia, and want to see them dominate the sales charts.  In the end, they don't care if nvidia releases a slower card, they just want their own brand loyalty validated and reinforced by others choosing the inferior part like they did.  Actually, that goes too far, if they got a 970 when it launched it made more sense, if they got one after the 390 was released, the tweaked Hawaii part, they chose the slower horse and are desperately seeking validation through the purchases of others.  It's quite transparent.  Do not follow them into the abyss of inferior performance, they will lead you down the path of darkness and slower framerates and lower minimum frames in gpu ram heavy games and dx12 titles.

Holy fanboy batman.

minus the batman and yep, i try to not to fanboy and go for valid reasons but i feel like i'm saying those valid reasons too much.

Holy fanboy batman. The two trade blows and overclocking only matters if you do it. In GTA the 970 is more stable while the 390 hits higher fps spikes. Since the OP is on a 1080p set and the chances are they're at 60hz anything over 60fps is pointless. So ether card with do the job. Get the one you want to look at behind the glass of your case at that point

Fanboy is a term for someone who's product isnt as great as the others.

390 - Rebranded 290 With higher clocks and 8 gb Vram

That would make anyone pushing the 390 a Fanboy. The 970 on the other hand is a Gem and Nvidia has 82% market share. I'm not a fanboy. I just dont buy rebranded garbage :)

Core I7 5960X / Gigabyte X99 SOC Force / Kingston 16GB DDR4 3000 / EVGA GTX 980 Classified's In Quad SLI / EVGA 1600W G2

Getting 90fps while using a 60hz monitor is like having a two foot dick. Great for bragging about but useless all the same. My 290 hits the max 60fps cap put in place by Steam in every game I play.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

without going into shouting territory, the 300 series isn't a rebrand, as you said it is superior even if not by that much.

OP is gaming at 1080P but you bust out 1440P and 4K benches... Genius dude

Please go learn some Physics so that you can understand how insignificant 60W is

Please go educate yourself on how resolution scaling and game requirements work.

If you can find an r9 290 less than $200 get it. I got my MSI r9 290 gaming for $143 and overclocked it to outperform the 390x. The 390 however can be found for $263 and that price will fall eventually to around $250 for most brands. Just don't get either a 390 or 970 as MSRP. Definitely not worth it

Yeah. Stock MSI r9 390x gaming with factory oc. I wouldn't really bet on overclocking a mid to high end AMD gpu as a real performance indicator because a lot of them are really terrible overclockers

What? A stock Msi 390x factory OC is 1100mhz. Your 290 is probably near or at the 1200mhz range, isn't it?

:) Nice. 850Mhz (Must have been an early one)

Every single AMD card I've owned has been a fucking EPIC overclocker.

3x 7950's, 5-6 290's, 3 290x's

7950's, 2 were stock 880mhz ones, both taken to 1000mhz with EASE, could do 1100mhz easy. The last one topped out at 1025Mhz being unstable at 1100mhz

My 290's (947-1040mhz stock/fac oc) , every one, hits 1100Mhz without voltage, while useless chasing more, needing more voltage, 1100mhz without voltage is nice

290x's, all do 1100Mhz again, two of them hit 1175Mhz.

Over time I noticed, most AMD cards get close or past 1100Mhz, its the 1200Mhz thats the bitch to crack.

Oh forgot.. the little piece of poo 270x I had... 1175Mhz/1550Mhz

Their not shit overclockers, they aint half bad in my experience.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I just like to add - 1 MHz for AMD means more than 1 MHz for Nvidia - so while Nvidia OC better - they gain less

'Brute Force' is applicable,...tis what comes to my mind.

That is a low end card now. And I meant the hawaii/greneda GPUs which overclock poorly and the Fury(x) which almost doesn't want to overclock at all

This is actually true. But the thing is AMD cards gain a lot while some don't want to overclock at all. Look at Jayztwocent's r9 290x platinum which only went up +25mhz. And Kyle's liquid cooled r9 390x only went up to 1150mhz. Also if you read Newegg reviews most people complain either about the heat or almost no overclockability

It's at 1130 right now. I could go more but I really don't like the heat. It's not the card's fault though. The Twin Frozr is quiet but not fantastic in terms of overclocking. And I didn't mean the msi card, sorry. I compared my scores on game benchmarks to that of r9 390x reviews which was most likely the xfx one with a factory oc of 1050mhz core. 1100mhz should be pretty easy to reach on a decent 390x though.

You didn't say now and it definitely not low end yet.

My friend's Fury-X overclocked to 1125mhz which is pretty good with stock voltage.

That would certainly match the performance of a 390x but to beat it at that clock speed? Really tall order.

Yeah. Honestly I don't have a lot of games as of now. But with BioShock Infinite Maxed 1440p + DDOF I get 81 fps, GTA 5 1440p With High/Very High Settings 62 fps. I won't argue though. The 390x is a more powerful card but for the price of a 390x you can get 2 290s or in my case 3. I just recommended to OP not to get one right now if they want a good deal. However the Gigabyte 390 is at a pretty good price but obviously its not the best 390. I might get a 390 for crossfire if they go below $250 and maybe I can find a refurbished or open box one.

R9 390. Especially if you ever get the erge to wanna play games at higher resolutions and some 1080p games like Shadow of Mordor w/ HD Texture Pacls go nesr or,past 4GBs of VRAM. Also AMD has Raptr for streaming games. And there are other programs out there like my personal favorite, OBS.

for the record, my 970 has no problems at all running shadow of morder with the ultra hd texture pack at 1080.  not 60fps of course(neither does the 390 btw), but more than playable.  not saying its better, but they do trade blows.

get the one thats cheaper. unless you care about shadowplay or temperatures/power requirements.

Yeah. I don't beat it by too much. My main point is that they are almost in the same league but the 8gb of vram is a very nice touch.
