5930k or 5960x?

if you are sure about x99, these are your options:

- 5960x - rendering beast, not as good as the others with gaming tho... (6 cores OC better than 8 cores)

- 5930k - same as 5820k, but better sli/crossfire support, if you want lotsa PCIe lanes, get this one.

- 5820k - probably the best option.

 

^ This! As an owner of the 5960X I will have to agree with everything, but the OC potential. The 5960X is a beast in everything, gaming, rendering, it just crushes everything. However, if you consider the 650$ price difference it is probably better to just get the 5820K. Yes, it does have 2 cores less, but unless you are a content creater for a living like I am, I wouldn't really bother spending that extra cash. The 5820K will do you just fine. Also when owning a 5960X it is kind of expected not to cheap out on the board and RAM and these things will cost you as well. 

 

If you have some decent overclocking skills you can get 4.5GHz out of a 5960X easy. For anything more than that you will definitely need at least triple rad setup. You can overclock the 5820K to 4.6-4.7GHz without a fancy custom loop, simply because it has fewer cores and therefore, is not as power-hungry of a chip.  

 

Do upgrade that PSU though, especially if you are planning on changing that graphics card. You will need more than 650W, since X99 processors do use quite a lot of power when they are overclocked.  

Ok so im wanting to upgrade from my old i3-2100. 

im going to be doing rendering and gaming on my new cpu

budget is not an issue here so throw me anything 

i will be using a H105 for overclocking

I was thinking either 5960x 5820k

I just want a good balance between gaming and rendering, i also want to be more "futureproof" so i wont have to upgrade in at least another 3 years

throw me some suggestions

i could even wait for broadwell-E if it's be good

 

other current specs:

gtx760

8gb ddr3 ram

500watt psu

 

I will be getting 16gb of ddr4 ram and x99-a asus motherboard if i go x99

5820K, no justification for a $1000 CPU.

5960x may just be too overkill AND in 6 months there will be Broadwell-E, so you could get a 5820k then a 6960x in the future if you need more cores.

I think you'll just be fine with 6 cores.

Also, I think you'll need to upgrade your PSU if you get X99.

I hope you also plan on replacing the "500watt psu". The lack of a brand name disturbs me. 

 

The 5820K is the way to go. The 5960X is at a price point where it would probably make more sense to get a similarly priced Xeon for rendering.

if you can afford the 5960x then the 2 extra cores will be worth it when it comes to rendering

No one should ever buy or be allowed to buy a 5930k because for the same price (or cheaper) as a 5930k and ok-ish x99 mobo you can buy a 5820k with a PLX godly motherboard and then you have much better components around the board (unless Epeen is really that big of a deal with you.)

I don't see much point in the 5930K unless you're absolutely planning to use more than 28 PCIe lanes. Triple- and quad-SLI/Crossfire configurations aren't particularly cost-effective for how unpredictable they can be, so I wouldn't recommend them.

 

The 5960X's best-case scenario is rendering tasks, but I'd personally say that everything from the i7-4790K/6700K on up are excellent rendering chips. The 5960X is more like a low-end professional workstation processor, so it might be a bit overdoing it unless you have a ton of money to burn.

 

If you're aiming for a good, sensible balance, that's the i7-4790K, i7-6700K, or i7-5820K.
