Do I Need a Mac Or a PC?

Go to solution Solved by 79wjd,

Retina MacBook Pro for me. Excellent Screen, AMAZING battery, extremely sturdy, OSX El Capitan is very fast and responsive even for an OSX.

When you look at Windows Laptop that has similar specs, built, and form factor like the Dell XPS 13 infinity display, the Retina Macbook Pro costs less than those even.

Speaking of El Capitan, how long have you been using it/have you run into any annoying bugs (like the Day-1 mavericks crashes)? I still haven't decided if it's time to upgrade from Yosemite yet.

The only value I can find for battery life is 4 hours with common use. Can't find it, sorry.

I thought it was quite a bit better than 4hrs?

I can get an easy 4 hours with heavy use from my Mac.

@OP, it may be wise to wait (assuming you can) for Broadwell/Skylake 15" pros (usually released late October) for the better battery life and faster iGPU.

Hello

First of all please leave your biased opinons and hate for both apple and or windows at the door. I do not want this to turn into a shitfest of APPLE IS BETTER or WINDOWS IS BETTER

If you think one or the other then state it, and state why.

I have a macbook pro 13 inch from 5 years ago that is on its last limbs (i used it too much)

I also built a desktop and use that for gaming

SO THIS LAPTOP WILL NOT BE FOR GAMES/GAMING

I will be using my laptop for:

Schoolwork (google drive/docs)

Internet Browsing

Coding (i really really like the terminal in mac os x)

Adobe Photoshop & Adobe in general

Teamviewer (my friends like to watch me on teamviewer)

I dont have a budget

i dont care about the price that much

leave your suggestions!

:)

(will not respond for a while, schoolwork i have to do on my almost dead laptop :P)

I think in this case, either would be fine

Ok, and why?

please tell me your reasoning.

Native SSH is nice?

Either is really fine, it really just comes down to battery life/which OS you prefer. I personally prefer a OSX, and Apple has some of the best laptop screens coupled with a PCIE ssd and excellent battery made my rMBP the obvious choice for me. (Plus the fact that my 2007 MBP is still running strong)

Oh, its not only native SSH.

I installed brew and a bunch of other applications with it. For example i can navigate my computer with the terminal, and that it has a lot of simularities of linux, but without the fact that no programs are compatable with linux, and that if any programs that are compatable with linux, it is most likely compatable with mac. Im saying this because mac is made off of unix.

also alot of people have mac, unlike the community of unix people.

Well, instead of a Macbook you may stick with a high-end Lenovo laptop like the Y50 series. Light but powerful notebooks, slightly expensive but still cheaper (and more powerful) than Macbooks :)

It has a 4k display, not too much of a fan of that because that probably destroys the battery.

Apart from Linus' review, one of my colleagues has a 4K Y50 and the battery is just fine. It's a 15.6" monitor, it doesn't really absorbs a lot of power.

It sounds like you already have a reason to go with Macs. You have had one and are familiar with it, the OS, and know what you need from a new laptop. I would go with a Mac, for the great build quality, warranty, and ease of use. If it gets stolen, it is really easy to brick to prevent anyone from using it (my uncle and cousin did this over the summer when their macs got stolen in Europe.) Macs have great screens and are great all around, and although they cost a lot, they last twice as long as most laptops I see, and retain much more performance (less corrupt files and other fragments to slow OS.) Lenovos have spyware, I would stay away.

I like good humans and good food

who actually likes navigating via command line.... regardless, I use my Mac for coding as does probably about half of the CS department, but the other half uses windows/Linux. So considering the nature of the split, it's a safe assumption to make that neither has any coding specific advantages.

There are also 1080p y50 variants (but the issue with the 4k y50 isn't the battery life, it's windows scaling).

theres a guy that does coding streams on twitch every so often, and he swears loyal to coding on a mac.

if you have the money for a macbook pro, it'll do documents just fine, as well as browsing (theres a port of firefox for mac thats almost as well implemented as safari, i heard)

adobe seems to be really keen on their software running on mac, theres a photographer thats REALLY not hyped about photoshop for mac, although its mostly little details.

as for teamviewer: they're probably about the most compatible piece of software i've seen in a while. (even their linux support is pretty decent.)

Either way is fine. I would suggest a MacBook Pro 13" again. (Though that is a bit pricey) or a Dell XPS 13" 2015 edition.

Both have better than average CPUs (MacBook Pro having a better CPU and iGPU), high resolution displays (1600p+) and good construction.

Note: The Dell has a higher resolution display, and smaller form factor + touch screen.

he rarelyb streams tho - and only few of his streams are coding streams. and he's on a month long break because he's moving across the states.

something something keychain and stuff, hell idunno. its mostly just firefox, but adjusted to fit in the apple ecosystem i gues...

(i've never touched a mac myself, so i wouldnt know xD)

(will not respond for a while, schoolwork i have to do on my almost dead laptop :P)

I have used both Mac and PC extensively, so I would consider myself fairly well versed on this subject. I would personally say go with a PC. There are some excellent IDEs available for pretty much any programming language you like on PC, whereas your options are somewhat limited. In terms of browsing the web and schoolwork, I would also say PC is your best bet. There are more options in terms of browsers, word processors, presentation software, readers and other similar programmes that are on the whole more feature rich. Also, the new MacBooks don't have Ethernet ports, and my experience with TeamViewer is that it sometimes gets a bit clunky when your connection can't support it as well as some other online activities like Google docs.

Hope I've helped

I was a windows only guy before I went to work on a Google project and it opened my eyes to other OSs, I now run linux servers, windows desktops, and a MacBook Air.

I bought the 11 inch Air for all the reasons you listed but I traded up to the 13 inch a year later for the SD card reader and couldn't be happier with my choice.

Go MacBook Air 11 inch for portability or 13 inch for 3 hrs more battery life & SD card reader.

Max out the RAM to 8 GBs.

Kick up the flash storage to 256 GB or 512 GB if it is in your budget.

P.S. If you like the standard mac terminal try iTerm, I love it for coding and trouble shooting remotely...
