I was just on dell's website checking out their Area-51 Desktop that is being advertised almost everywhere. I wanted to see the specs of the system and something caught me a little off guard in the graphics card section..

Alienware Area-51 Gaming Desktop

It seems like an uneducated, newbie, child, pc-builder just threw all the parts in pcpartpicker.com trying to build the best system possible. 12GB of VRAM from 3 GTX 980s HOLY SHIZAH! Last time I checked, VRAM doesn't stack. Maybe Dell did some sort of awesome hack that enabled them to get 12GB out of 3x 4GB cards.. who knows. I'm not the only one seeing this, right?

Common misconception + marketing. I would be surprised if it were marketed as 4GB.

Well maybe their marketing team should learn a thing or two about computers and how they work. I feel like this is an error that would've been caught by now though. By someone working for Dell that can actually get issues like this sorted out. Seems like a silly error, but it seems to be sitewide. Not only on this system.

I would classify this as "false adverteising" and "overpriced as fuck"

Another one that thinks he found some crazy Alienware mystery.

We all know that they are completly correct with what they advertise. There are physically 12GB of VRAM in there.

And apart from that SLI uses the full amount of VRAM. It does that by copying the data into each card, so each card has its own copy of data on the VRAM.

They dont lie here. Its 12 GB VRAM in total, that it will not stack isnt a necessary Information in Dell´s Eyes.

That´s a scam attempt in my Eyes.

I don't get what you mean... ôo

Anyways, this isn't false advertisement as you described it.

Yah, that made alot more sence in my head. Something to do with the alien meme man.

as for this topic, well, that depends on weather you count vram as stacking.

No, it does not depend on that.

It literally says:

"Triple NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 980 graphics with 12GB total (3x 4GB)"

They never said anything about SLI or stacking VRAM. And no matter if you use SLI or not, those 12GB of VRAM are usable.
