Corsair *gulp* CX Series PSU

Go to solution Solved by don_svetlio,

Looking at your signature - you may be fine for now - the GPU is probably rather cool but generally the CX are no to be used for anything but office PCs - they don't like heat - any heat - they don't like summer - at all.

After browsing the forums for a couple of days, I've been noticing people diverting attention away from the Corsair CX PSU series.
Is there something that I should know about mine?
I've had a CX430 for 3 years or so now, and it's been absolutely fine, but obviously don't want to keep it much longer if it's going to start taking out components.

My HW had been through a couple of *very* cheap unbranded 500W PSUs before this.

Thanks.

People tend to exaggerate how good or bad things are. Corsair CX has just been a recent one. Your psu is fine and not as bad as some would say.

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/

If this

FX-6100 @4.4GHz (Stock Cooler) / 4x4GB Hyperam @ 1333MHz / OCZ Octane 250GB SSD / Asus HD6670 2GDDR3 / Asus M5A78LM-USB3

is your hardware, then it's just fine.

CX series is not amazing or something, but it's good enough for low-end builds.

Check:

Have you put it under heavy load for extensive periods of time?

Have you Overclocked?

If your going to overclock ABORT get as far away from that thing as possible, Your build seems very basic, what the PSU was meant to do.

You  DO NOT want to run a 970 and a i5 on it. Thats the kind of things that make it kill itself

Hence the

cx is ok for like office builds and light use situations but anything that resembles a gaming or serious workstation rig needs something more substantial.

from there you want to move on to brands like evga seasonic and xfx (stay away from higher end corsair units since they are overpriced for what they offer), look up reviews online before pulling the trigger on a new psu, johnnyguru is a great place to look up info on psus

The CX Series aren't complete trash, I've got a CX500M and my components generate quite a bit of heat but I've had zero problems with it. If you plan on upgrading other hardware in your system than upgrade your PSU, but if you don't plan on upgrading anything else just yet don't worry about it.

If you still have warranty on it I would continue to use it if it seems fine but if you don't have warranty I would definitely replace especially since you have a OC with a FX although it isn't anything high end so you should be fine http://www.overclock.net/t/1431436/why-you-should-not-buy-a-corsair-cx

Not saying I recommend it but my brother has a 4790k and a GTX 980ti running on a CX750M, he's had it running like that for nearly 3 months now with zero issues.

Another PC I built, had a FX 4300 OC'd and 2x 270x's in Crossfire (OC'd) and that was built 1.5 years ago. Still running.

I have many Corsair CX PSU's I've used on systems of ranging power draw, and guess what!?! Not ever has a single one failed me or shut off unexpectedly. Everyone I've ever used has worked flawlessly. People who hate on CX Series PSU's need to realize that the low temperature window of 30 degrees Celsius can completely be avoided by proper airflow. It doesn't matter what case you're using, or which components (obvioulsy quad titan x's is a different story), if you properly cool the CX PSU's they work perfectly.

inb4 you crash and burn xD - never say 100% sure - you cannot guarantee the OP won't have issues :)

EDIT: Quad Titans will actually keep the case cool as they exhaust out the back - but airflow - good or bad - the PSU gets warm - mine gets warm even on an open case and it's a lot more efficient and higher quality than the CX :)

I have had an i7 3770, and 2 760s running on my cx750m for over 2 years, and it has had a 780ti for the past little while. So far I have had no issues, and I know that that does not make the PSU good, but people that say that they will catch fire even if its not even stressed may be over exaggerating...

Yeah, but PSU's are very simple. each one should be the same as the next. they don't have cores in them...

I didn't say every CX PSU will work perfectly, however from a decent sample size of about 20 PSU's purchased over two years I've had zero issues. Also Quad Titan X's will make the case very hot as although they exhaust air out the rear they still radiate heat.

Still - you can't predict the way electronics behave - not yet anyway :)

Corsair are overpriced - argue with that :P

Most things perform very similarly especially when they're manufactured at the same time, or when they're the same product. Stuff like PSU's, RAM, SSD's etc often have very little variation in performance, the only variation comes from other variables in the system.

I can agree that SOME Corsair products are overpriced, mainly the PSU's. However their cases, RAM, Coolers (other than that recent h100i spike) and peripherals are all worth their money. I mean I could beat someone to death with my Corsair Case, RAM, and Keyboard / Mouse and they'd still work fine. They make very premium looking and feeling products at usually reasonable prices.
