Transferring Windows 10 License

Go to solution Solved by Stefan1024,

I was wondering if I would be able to get my Windows cd-key then uninstall the license for Windows 10 on my laptop using the command slmgr /dlv and then transfer use it for my new PC im building? Also I took use of the Windows 10 free upgrade from Windows 8?

No you can't (as far as I know). But you can try to reset to win 8, transfer the win 8 licence and update to 10 again.

Windows 10 seems to be tied the the motherboard regardless of what you upgraded to get it. They seem to have mostly done away with the idea of transferring licences between machines. I don't know if its the case officially but I had problems. I know Microsoft did do something to make installing Windows 10 clean the first time easier but I don't know about transfers.

If you did an upgrade, I believe it is registered as the same version as which you had preinstalled. So if it was an OEM copy on the original machine, it would be a nontransferable license (calling microsoft support may be able to get them to reissue it, but it depends on who you get). If you originally installed retail windows 8, you should be able to transfer it by installing windows 8 again and doing the free upgrade.

Interesting topic, I am guessing that this is to prevent people from buying one Windows 7 Pro CD, upgrading to Windows 10 Pro,

and then re-selling or passing around the Windows 7 Pro CD to get multiple copies of Windows 10 Pro for free.

Exactly. That is the idea.

If you go out and buy Windows 10 in stores retail box/license. Then it is like any previous version of Windows retail license. You have a product key, and you can transfer it to another system. As log as it is installed on 1 system, you are good to go.
