So I own an MSI GTX 970 Gaming 100ME Limited Edition GPU, a dude from nearby area has a two-months old Sapphire R9 390 Nitro Tri-X that he wants to trade for a GTX 970 for some reason.

Obviously it would be a great deal for me since it's just a better card, however I doubt my PSU can handle it but I have to be certain. It's just old and even when it was new it wasn't good (I wasn't the one who picked it sadly).

As far as I know a 600W PSU is a minimum to power an R9 390, especially that Sapphire version, I wouldn't be overclocking it though until I change the power supply. That power supply has served me flawlessly for nearly 7 years and it still works perfectly, however considering the fact that my CPU is an 8350 overclocked to 4,5gHz it's most likely not enough. It can run my system under full load with my 970 overclocked to 1530mhz core clock without any issues though.

Is there any chance that it's enough to power this 390? If not, would it be enough to just temporarily run it for a month or two while only browsing the web and playing League of Legends (it doesn't use more than 15-20% of the GPU anyway) until I get a better PSU?

600W as a whole is enough, but Chieftec is far from a quality PSU. Replace it if you want to upgrade your GPU to anything half decent.

It's multi-rail - that might be an issue. I'm surprised the 970 is even working with 36 amps actually

I just thought pushing too far might cause issues.

 

I would probably suggest replacing the PSU once you have saved up.

It's a 50/50 chance, but since it lasted you 7 years it would probably not.(do not take this as a yes, but as a maybe)

So I found out that the Sapphire Nitro 390 draws around 90Watts more under full load than the MSI GTX 970 Gaming. Does overclocking the 970 by 200mhz core and 500mhz memory increase the power draw significantly?

Probably 25% less  than it's AMD equivalent.

It might, I won't have this 8350 forever though, gonna get an i7 relatively soon, was thinking about the i7-3820 and an X79 motherboard, these CPUs got very very cheap in my country recently.
