G3258 OC vs I3 4160

 I am getting getting a budget gaming computer and these are the CPU I am going to decide on. Mainly for Gaming. The g3258 will be OC on a Asrock z97 anniversary and a hyper 212 Evo. For the 4160 it will be a stock cooler and a Gigabyte GA-H81M. Which will do better? Thanks for the replies.

The Core i3 would be the choice. High clock speed, better single-core performance, better multi-tasking performance (with hyperthreading), and most likely cheaper too.

Yeah the CPU will be more expensive, but you'll save money by going with a H81 motherboard and standard CPU cooler. Makes more sense overall.

unless you can get an i5 4460, the i3. Pentium is not worth it.

Yes, the i3 will struggle sooner rather than later.  

 

A G3258, being about half the price of an i3, makes a decent starter/placeholder for a later i5 upgrade.  But it too is on borrowed time.

Newer games the i3. If you are addicted to CSGO get the pentium. I personally use an A10 7850k and since playing CSGO it is my go to game for stress relief.

i3 because it has hyperthreading which means 4 threads. Modern games need 4 threads to run. Only benefit of the pentium is that it overclocks.

That's wasteful since in a yea the 1150 socket might be completely phased out by lower end Skylake i5s and i3s - best get an i3 and get a Skylake i5 6400 in 2 years.

The i3 is a much better choice, but if you go H81 consider an Asus H81 board that supports BIOS updates through flash drives in the off chance you get a board with an old BIOS not compatible with Haswell Refresh CPUs. You might also consider waiting for the i3-6100 and the H110 boards, as the 6100 is a 3.7 GHz chip that will also get a bit of a boost in IPC, being Skylake. I'd imagine there will also be DDR3 H110 boards since there are DDR3 Z170 in case you want to reuse DDR3 RAM you might have in your current system. Otherwise you could opt for a DDR4 board and get the new standard of RAM.

 

What GPU are you using? A GTX 750 Ti at $100 is a pretty nice choice for CS:GO. Anything below $100 will give you severely diminshing returns for not a whole lot less money.

You should follow your topic man. The stock cooler is plenty for a Haswell i3, it's only a 53W chip. Hell, it's plenty on my 80W Haswell Xeon. And if you go with a Skylake i3 it's only a 47W chip.

^^ this is a very well executed video and it's right on the money...the core i3, even the 4130 which is very low clocked is better at running modern games than an overclocked pentium, the i3-4160 for example should have no problem keeping up with lower end and mid-range GPU's at 1080p gaming.

Forget my i3-6100 suggestion. I just saw on amazon they're not expecting them to be for sale until October 26th, and they want $152 + $10.24 shipping.

For $10 more you could get a freaking i5-4460 that would kill an i3-6100.
