Well, I'm embarrassed. I'm usually on the "Helping" side of these issues, but now I'm not.

I just want to verify my situation and get suggestions.

1. I recently did an upgrade to windows 10. No problems, genuine key I got from school for windows 8, etc etc.

2. Needed to do a system upgrade, which involved swapping the motherboard.

3. Windows is no longer activated (I suspected that would happen). What I didn't expect to see what the fact it could not, and that "it has been blocked".

4. In reading http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/why-activate-windows-10 I see that I may just need to revert to 8.1 and re-upgrade.

So, Number 4 is not wanted, spending the money on a copy of windows is fine with me if absolutely necessary.  I figure I'm not currently taking any classes, so, probably should own my own copy anyway. But, I don't want to do that if not necessary.

Questions:

1. Is there a number I can call to have my case looked at? I clicked "contact support" and it brings me to "http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/genuine" So helpful!

2. Any idea how long I will have access before getting locked out?

1. https://support.microsoft.com/lt-lt/gp/customer-service-phone-numbers/en-us#u

2. Atleast a month. I think 3. Not sure on 3.

Reverting the update is the easiest.

Have you tried phone activation (slui 4 command) ?

Thanks!

I just tried that, got a number, called and "You must re-install old version and then re-upgrade".

I think im just gonna buy a key. Because "re-install" is Install 8, do updated, 8.1, do updates, then 10, all over again.

The question is: when the free-year upgrade is over, will I still be able to swap my mobo for a new one? Since I won't be able to upgrade for free from W8.1...

Supposedly you can do a clean install after doing the upgrade on the new monthrboard.

However, if you were to update the motherbaord again, you are probably out of luck unless you had a Retail copy. I am assuming these problems are related to OEM stuff.

Yes, Win10 is no longer a licenses OS but digital entitlements, so it becomes free forever, as long as one of your parts stays original coming from an upgrade, I'm not sure if in the case you use a live account to use will the key get tied to that account, I know it does if you buy the key so you can use the account anywhere on one a machine.

Just install 8, upgrade from 8 to 10 no need to go to 8.1.

if you have changed your motherboard, and your license is oem.

Then its normal that your windows gets deactivated, since your system mobo id that gets stored on the MS activation servers does not match with the system id of your mobo.

You need to phone MS and activate by phone.

Yes, I am used to this.

However, because this is an upgrade to windows 10, it is different now. I did call, and they said I needed to re-install windows 7/8/8/1 whatever and re-upgrade on this motherboard.

:(
