Except it runs HOT.

none. The i5 is better than any AMD processor. Power is lower, single core performance is alot better, multi core is a little better (depends) and better upgradeability, and motherboards.

EDIT- autocorrect keeps changing AMD to and.

For single-threaded performance, none of them are as good.

For multi-threaded performance, an fx 8320 is a little bit more powerful.

By characteristics do you mean number of cores? if so then yes there are a few but they are in no way equivalent to the i5.

Sure, any FX-8xxx in multi threaded will beat the 4690K easily if overclocked to like 4.2GHZ+.

Single threaded......okay well just join the 6GHZ+ club.

Yeah there's one kinda like it. It's the i5 4690k. There's no AMD CPU's that are really as good overall. Unless you're already on the AMD AM3+ platform don't bother with any mid/high tier AMD CPU's.

There aren't any AMD processors that can compete with an overclocked i5. The architecture comes from the server market where simple, heavy workloads are needed to be done quickly. That was back in 2011, and the bulldozer architecture is just totally unsuitable for consumer or workstation-level applications, because our workflows are decidedly between 1 and 4 threads.

Only issue is that nobody, in their right mind, runs the 4690K at 3.5 GHz. I'm sure some can match it at it's stock speed, and probably surpass it if all cores are utilised (somewhat a rarity), but it needs a beefy cooler. but then you can OC the i5 to at least 4.2 Ghz with a $20 cooler.

None really. Single Core performance is crappy for AMD compared to Intel.

Unless budget editing. Then the only one you should grab is one of the AMD E series.

You could buy a locked non-overclockable i5 and get better results in many instances of daily usage where single-core performance matters, and CAN be seen.

Time is money for me....

Many may disagree, but I see the difference (more often due to my work) everyday between my decently clocked 4.6Ghz AMD FX6 & my locked i5 3.9Ghz Intel system.

The AMD system was built for the jobs in mind, (not that multi threaded as per the apps, but many apps at once running) the i5 walks away with it being faster, in every situation.

Performance of EACH core, matters.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

None that are really similar. AMD is somewhat recommended for low-mid end setups, as they have cheap multi core processors. They run hotter and use more power. Some are comparable to a locked i5 though.
