A lot of people believe this, but it is not true. The CPU still does the sound

It depends on the sound card and the game. In the case of Creative's SoundBlaster series with the SoundCore3D chip, if the game supports Alchemy, that'll have true hardware acceleration. However, will it make a difference? You MIGHT gain a couple FPS, but don't bank on it.

Ok, then if the CPU still does sound, how come my "Sound Core" is supposedly a quad-core sound processor. It obviously does something.

As I already stated, it's only hardware accelerated if the game supports Alchemy. Most games do not and therefore, you probably wont gain anything.

If there's any difference at all, it will put more of a strain on your CPU due to drivers and background software.
