Malware discovered on 39 apps in the Apple App Store

A malware that infects iOS apps through a malicious version of Apple's Xcode, has resulted in the discovery of at least 39 infected apps in the Apple App Store. Among the apps affected is the extremely popular Chinese messaging app WeChat, and ride-sharing app Didi Chuxing. The latter is the most popular Uber-esque service in China.

While past viruses on iOS were placed inside an app by the developer, created and published in the App Store to purposely create havoc, this malware enters an app without the knowledge of its developer. Since a rogue version of Xcode was used in this endeavor, the malware itself is being called XcodeGhost. 

 

 

If developer does not know then there will be countless ones in the store.. there will be many apps that are not updated and alternative version of the virus..

broader issue here: the way in which it got past Apple’s screening process in the first place.

The malicious version of Xcode was apparently taken off Baidu by Chinese iOS/OS X developers instead of using the most up-to-date version of the IDE available from Apple.

So what happens is that an infected version of Xcode got spread around, and when the app got compiled the malware was injected. Seems like it was limited to developers in China but it could have happened anywhere.

Just goes to show that no platform is immune to malware. Not even when each individual app has to get approved.

I agree. although considering how many people are on iOS, stuff like this will only continue to get worse before it gets better. (think, wack-a-mole)

clutching at straws much op?  39 out of several million, mainly Chinese apps, and because devs didnt use the official xcode software form apple. it is a little concerning that they managed to slip through the cracks but then would apple really be looking for this given how it was injected?  its a bit sensationalist.

Exactly. A simple hash sum should identify mismatched files.

Apple's policy involved checking all the apps.. and most of the apps are from non trustworthy developers, in sense just new or simple developers.. but few are famous one in china... So they would have definitely checked and passed it out as secured ones.. So if this could make its way, then how many are there which we do not know about..

I believe apple checks the uncompiled code, which means the unofficial Xcode app implants it after/when compiling.

What would malware on a phone do besides steal info? Overclock it so it melts, delete apps?

I believe apple checks the uncompiled code, which means the unofficial Xcode app implants it after/when compiling.

Statistically speaking 39 apps out of everything that's installable on iOS is basically nothing.

If so most of the attacks if taken individually will be basically nothing..it means apps are non malicious statistically in all platform
