What should I upgrade next

Glaith

Hi fellow Linus Techies,

I have been saving my Pennies for an ugrade and just want to know what your thoughts are, The system is for High end gaming.

I am running an Intel 2500k at 4.2 Ghz, 16 gig ram, and 280 x crossfired with a 7970

My choices are: Upgrade the Gpu to a 980 TI and keep the rest of the build.

So intel 2500k, 16 gig ram, 980 TI GPU

Or upgrade the CPU to a I7 6700 K

and ram to 16 gig DDR4 and keep the crossfired 280x 7970.

I am leaning towards just getting the 980 TI but would like to hear other inputs to see if it changes my mind.

I'd do the GPU first. That 2500K shouldn't bottleneck the 980Ti and you should see a big leap in gaming performance. Also, the upgrade to Skylake also necessitates a new board and RAM, so I'd wait until after you get the 980Ti to do those.

I'd do 980 Ti. Games will have better support with one card, not to mention you'll have less heat, noise and power usage.

Upgrading from a Sandy bridge CPU to a skylake CPU isn't going to make much of a difference, and even PC gamer will back me up on that

Follow the topics you create using the "Follow" button in the top right corner!

One day I will have my GTX 970. One day. PC specs are at my profile.

Not sure how to check what part works with what? Check out my compatibility guide!

upgrade the part thats limiting your system.

play your favourite games keeping close eye on the 4 cores of your processor.

are they maxed out troughout the gaming experience? then its time for a cpu swap.

are they not? gpu swap all the way.

Go for the 980 Ti, you'll get the most immediate improvement. Provided your 2500k isn't bottlenecking anything as it is, the GPU upgrade will be the best use of your money.
