Sounds like a pretty stupid question but I found a 960 for only $10 more on newegg ($10 more than the cheapest 950 so about the same price as the higher 950's) and I thought, that must be a good deal!

But then I found out in some videos that the difference in performace is around 10 FPS, which made me think they maybe the cheaper, more power efficient and DX12 supported GTX 950 was the better value. So which one do you think I should get?

Tbh I'm kinda leaning towards the 950 because it's newer, more power efficient, cheaper, not far from a 960, and 95 is my favorite number :)

But if you want to try and convince me, I'm still open to switching my future purchase to the beloved 960

The 960 is a better buy, and if you plan to use NVIDIA's features, then don't bother with AMD. Especially if you can get a 960 for $170 or so, as you said you can. A 960 for $170 will beats an R9 285 for $230 any day. The 960 can drive Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain at mostly-max at 1080p. (Simply turning off Ambient Occlusion will net you a stable 60fps in even intense scenes.)

you can EASILY get the ITX 285 for $175 on Newegg

And trust me, that $5 extra is worth it.

Neither.

R9 280, 285, 380 or 280x are better choices!

Don't think I wanna go w/ AMD. Mostly because they are too power hungry but also because they don't have the specific cooler I want. I'm looking at MSI Armor 2x coolers because of the awesome black and white color scheme which will look amazing w/ the rest of my build.

http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R9-285-vs-GeForce-GTX-960 -- I don't trust this site blindly, but from what I knew, the 960 was better than the 280 and 285, and worse than the 280x, and this confirms what I thought.

The 960 is barely weaker than the 280, weaker than the 285, and noticeably weaker than the 280X.

Sorry but I just don't see AMD in the picture. All these cards you guys are suggesting use around 100 watts more power! And I'm sure that the performance cannot be that justifiable. Plus I'm also trying to make this build look good aesthetically so unless I see a nice Black and White Cooler at around $170, I just don't think I'm gonna go for it.

power consumption is definitely something to consider with gpus, as well as heat and noise

its the reason i went with the 970

I have a hard time understanding the place for the 950. 960 is fine, AMD has cheaper/similarly priced options that perform better than the 960, 960 is cheaper than my 650Ti BOOST SC and 550Ti were, etc. Just don't quite understand it.

960 is worth that extra $10.

Your average lightbulb is 80w. Where I am power costs 58c/KwH. The lightbulb costs next to nothing to run. The increased wattage really isn't that bad however the 970 is only behind by 1-3 frames and the 3.5gb of VRAM is enough.

I'm torn between both as I want to casually game at 4K (med, 30Hz) but the 8gb in the 390 VRAM seems to help. I'll have to wait and see the difference after dx12 but I will probably be going with the 390.

R9 380 Armor X2 - also - 380 draws 20W more than a 960.
