Input lag over hdmi

Hey guys,

 

I brought my monitor over to uni, incase i could not get used to the small screen on my laptop, but one thing im noticing is that the input lag is quite bad over hdmi.

 

I don't remember it being that bad when i was using my desktop (using displayport)

 

I have gone through the monitor settings, for any fast response modes, to no avail, and there is nothing the the gpu control panels either.

 

It does not feel as bad as suing a TV, but it does feel like the mouse is connected to jelo.

some cheaper stuff is just awful like that.

 

what helped for me was force the GPU to output at 59.7Hz (you may want to play with this value a bit, it seems to be very device-specific between changing nothing, fixing it, and not working at all)

For some reason both the onboard monitor, and the hdmi out are controlled by the intel hd graphics on my laptop, so i can change the refresh rates...

 

Bit of a pain in the ass.

I know you don't like Apple, but come on man, there is no 'worse' with a digital signal, it either is there or not, completely digital.

I'll get someone else to test it as well, just to make sure im sane.

 

Personally it feels worse, and feels almost "fatiguing" to use, but it might just be because of the different res/ mouse sensitivity, than on the laptops onboard monitor.

no what im saying is that i went to the apple store and asked them what was so special about their 20$ HDMI cables and they said "NOTHING"

The HDMI cable can't be causing the issue. The good/bad thing about digital connections are that they either work, or they don't. nothing inbetween. 

It could be that on your monitor there are some post processing effects going on that are causing the input lag. 

 

Some troubleshooting steps to consider are.

 

First, reset your monitor to factory settings even if you never messed with any of them, then test. (This will eliminate messed up monitor settings causing the input Lag)

 

Second, Look through ALL of the Monitor's settings and see if there are things turned on, and turn them off unless it's something called Game mode, you want to turn on a game mode if it has one. Test. (This will eliminate any fancy unnecessary settings from causing the input lag)

 

Third, test a friend's laptop on your screen to see if you can duplicate the results. (This will eliminate your laptop as the possible cause)

 

Fourth, ????

Thanks for the help. At this point ive just gone back to using the laptop screen.

 

The config of the monitor is the exact same as it was when it was connected to my desktop, and i have been using it like that for months without any issue.

 

I have a feeling that the hdmi output on my laptop/ the hdmi input on the desktop isn't ideal. something is causing the input lag, and when i duplicate the screens, as soon as i do anything on the laptop screen, it feels fine, but anything i do on the monitors feels like molasses. like its hard to close/ drag windows, because i keep overshooting with the pointer.

 

I was thinking about getting a hdmi to dp adapter, but that would only help if the monitor is the issue, as i know for sure that the dp connector on the monitor is good.

 

My friends got a 144hz monitor with low input lag out of the box, so ill take my laptop over sometime, to see if he can notice a difference, as it will be worse for someone that's used to 144hz.

My guess: Your monitor is doing post processing on the image. like TVs do to "enhance" the image. Normally TV do it because 1080p for the screen size is really bad.

Input lag was no problem when i was using displayport with my desktop. Its only an issue now when i used hdmi with my laptop.

 

Response time is 6ms, so not the best, but I couldn't notice any problems when on my desktop.

Just FYI, response time has nothing to do with latency/input lag.

I might not be using the correct term, but im talking about the time between you moving the mouse, and it happening on screen.

Yeah, that is called latency, it's never listed on a monitor's spec sheet. The "6ms response time" numbers printed on the box is something completely unrelated, it just happens to be confusingly named.
